She pled guilty to a lesser charge.

Murder in front of a jury is never guaranteed. She might have been able to convince them it was an accident.

Bright was pregnant at the time and was legally intoxicated. She also admitted to using marijuana.

Upon reading the title, I thought the woman was incredibly malicious and had gotten a full mangina/cuck/soyboy jury and/or judge, but upon reading a bit of the details in the link and a bit from google fu, it seems like she and her husband were both alcoholics and drug addicts.

I could see a reasonable case being made that this was not done with malice or premeditation.... I'm glad she was convicted because what she did is unacceptable but there is a big difference between an accident, even if it's a REALLY stupid/easily avoidable one, and a malicious killing.

I agree that 12 years in prison and 5 years probation is reasonable. As long as she serves the whole sentence, no early release bullshit.
