What does it mean to "man up" in current year?

"Man up", as it's used in current year, seems to mean shut your mouth and do something clearly not in your best interest.

You asked what it means to "man up". It depends on if you are the one doing the 'manning up' or if you are being told to 'man up'

If you are the one doing it, it generally means being strong and self reliant, resourceful, firm, unmoving. Kind of like a spiritual snorlax blocking the path to ruin.

On the other hand, if you are being told to 'man up' it generally means 'act the way I expect men to act, help women, do not think of yourself'

It's usually used as a shaming tactic to try to badger men into a behavior. "Man up and get married" so he can sacrifice everything he worked for to an ungrateful wife; "man up and take responsibility for rape" caused by other people, including women; "man up and accept abuse and violence cause by violent women" and discrimination caused by society; "man up and protect women" because of course women need and deserve more protection and it's men's duty to do so /s

It's basically either just "conform to these restrictive roles", or "conform to these feminist demands". The two coincide more than people would think, e.g. HeForShe is basically just rewording the traditional "women and children first"

I would disagree with you that toxic behaviors are being labeled as inherent masculine traits. The term “toxic masculinity” refers to unhealthy standards imposed on men by society, not biological traits associated with masculinity. Masculinity is fine.

The very conception of the phrase fundamentally denote or entails "Be the best tool you can be for women's desires" and always has, it's just that over time what culturally qualifies as "women's desires" has managed to change a bit. It's an excuse to make you do something you don't want. You never hear "woman up". Nobody forces women into doing anything that's against their nature, because they are not expected to sacrifice themselves. (No I'm not talking about sexual abuse, no need to turn it into that. Thank you.)

It doesn't have singular universal meaning.

MRM hypersensitivity to "man up" is very similar to feminist hypersensitivity to "fireman" for firefighters.

Of course the term can be used by assholes but ultimately it isn't the words which are to blame, its the intent.
