Many of us, especially those of us past a certain age, have affectionate memories of the feminist movement in the 1970s.

Roy Baumeister can speak for himself. "Affectionate" isn't the term I would use.

Is there anything good that could be said for feminism?

The economic scene has changed rapidly in the past couple of hundred years, upsetting the traditional tradeoffs between the sexes. By the 1970s, it was evident that the old arrangement wasn't working and there had to be changes. So, in pressing for change, the feminists were going in the right direction. But...

The giveaway is in the name. They didn't look for any sort of balance; no, it was all for the fems. Mindless, greedy self interest fueled by anything that would serve, lies mostly.

Decades of that, and here we are today. So...

We associated feminism with promoting equality, challenging entrenched wisdom, touting openness to free thought and new ideas,

and searching in an idealistic spirit for positive views toward both genders

Nope.

When women gained the right to vote in the UK, what was the first thing they voted for? Send men to war to get shot overseas? That was pro equality right? Wrong. The women stayed at home. Weren't too quick to want equality back then.

The feminism of the time specifically blamed men for all the problems they invented, they were even then more anti-male than pro-female.

I think it adequately covers the fact that 30 or 40 years ago, feminism stood for fairer principles.

Now it's just an inchoate cult-like collection of sob-sisters, victim-fetishists, man-blamers, grievance-hoarders, ideological robots and well-off sanctimonious white girls who think possessing a vagina provides them with a "diverse" viewpoint which is unarguably correct and wise at all times.

When I was studying left wing politics these sorts of nice, 'feel good' quotes were everywhere but reality as ever with these people never stacked up with what they were saying. These days I find the most extreme elements of Libertarianism, Voluntaryism ( This is what I am ) and even Anarcho-Capitalism are actually from a social standpoint far more in line with the left wing politics of old than the current left wing ever will be.

I think one of the reasons being is that in order to own private property you intrinsically need to be capable of independent thought to begin with otherwise you're just completely servile to whichever cunt with a gun comes along trying to take your shit, left or right, but mostly of course it's the left these days trying to take what they want.

The left wing politics of old are dead now, the only thing remotely close to the left being caring about free thought is classical Liberalism. Thomas Sowell recently did an interview with David Rubin and even he admitted that he'd either be a Classical Liberal or a Libertarian if he absolutely had to identify as something because of what the left has become.

Try reading "Child of the Glacier" the reflections of an early MRA from the 1960s. From a collection of essays called something like "Men explaining men" by someone or other. Memory failing (I thought it was Asa Baber but I guess maybe not).

I was there,

Women would parade down the streets and blame men for all the ills of the world.

They shut down all the male clubs and taverns.

We kept hearing that men are pigs.

The teacher would send in a girl to watch us use the urninals so we don't talk to each other or whatever was the reason... oh yes... to humiliate us to feel like cattle.

When I was in school during the 70's, a bunch of boys and I were sitting outside at the front of the school, before class. The female vice-principal comes up and tells us that we shouldn't be there. We give her some playful attitude about it and her response, is something to to effect of: "You boys are nothing but trouble, women are going to make the world a better place by getting rid of you.". All with a big smile on her face.

Even earlier in the 70's, my mother had just died a year earlier and I was in kindergarten. I tried to hold the hand of the teacher's aid in my class, because she was darker skinned and resembled my mother to me. She pushed my hand away and told me I was hurting all women by wanting comfort from her. Yep, she called a five year old boy a patriarchal oppressor.

Just a few of my good old (admittedly anecdotal), feminism memories....
