Her first mistake was representing herself. My guess is that she tried to get counsel but they probably all said she doesn't have a chance in winning.

I'd like to clarify that the article states she was made to pay 45k because intel claim that they overpaid her for sales work which she was not responsible for, after the review of her which concluded that she should be fired, presumably because of the review.
