Regardless of any of the details of the case, people need to understand their constitutional rights. The ONLY way someone can spend that long in jail is if they wave their right to a speedy trial. DO NOT waive your right to a speed trial unless you are planning on making bail (and if you make bail, that right is automatically waived anyway). People literally spend more time awaiting trials than they would get sentenced when found guilty. "Time served" is a common sentence because of this.
