Academia. The US went with a loan system before the UK and EU. As a result they jumped on the 'gender studies' bandwagon early, purely to cash in on students that weren't clevel enough to study real subjects. That junk science started to effect social change.

My hunch is that you will find the answer to this by looking at the culture in the universities.

Toxic feminism is third wave. It developed out of French postmodernist feminists like Cixcous (sp?), Kristeva, and one other I can never remember. They were derivative from male postmodernists Lacan, Derrida and Foucault.

After the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the left had to go somewhere to keep its radical anti-authoritarian chic. It went to French postmodernism.

There then followed big attempts from US academic feminism to bring feminism of a sort (toxic) into legal theory and legislation. Enter Catherine McKinnon and Andrea Dworkin.

On top of that, the particularly American preocupation with postmodernism and "deconstruction" (Derrida) lent itself naturally to the Berkeley professor Judith Butler's idea of gender performativity leading to today's obsession with men pretending to be women and the complete dislocation of gender from sex.

All of this comes from the university, and elite American universities have been more open to it than their European counterparts.

You might then ask why this is?

Well, I suspect it's because Europe generally has a longer pedigree and trends to be more constrained by tradition, especially in its elite. The British head of state still rides around on a horse, for goodness sake.

But it's also because American society generally is more open, perhaps because it's more modern and because of its constitutional protections for speech and thought.

Furthermore, since demonstrations of supremacy at arms concluded with the murder of 150,000 civilians in a split second in Hiroshima, America has ruled the world as by far the wealthiest nation, and much of that wealth has funded the university, giving them more freedom.

We have different laws which makes a difference in some areas. In the UK you cannot name people as in "me too" without being sued. In the USA you have freedom of speech laws which protect you. In the UK if someone names someone under "me too" the assault has to have actually happened or they can be sued. Hence lots of "this happened to me" (which are usually lies and jumping on the band wagon) without actually naming people in the UK.

The US historically has had more of an obsession with political correctness and identity politics. There was never a civil rights movement in Europe like there was in the US.

Are you serious? I'd say it's reversed, at least if you're talking Western Europe. I think what you're seeing is more people questioning feminism in the US, as opposed to Europeans keeping their heads down so they don't get fired/sent off to jail for speaking up.

You can't even get a freaking paternity test in France or Germany if the mother says no.

It's not "toxic" feminism. It's regular, run of the mill feminism. There is no such thing as feminism which isn't hateful or toxic, so why would you feel the need to state that?

I think single motherhood has exaggerated that to some extend. A father who is able to say no and set boundaries is often missing. There are more single mothers in the US and more intact families in europe.
