There was a discussion about this on Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show yesterday. If you’re not aware of the show, it’s a hot-topic discussion program where the presenter (Jeremy Vine) mediates a discussion between two guests with opposing viewpoints.

For this one, he had one of the “walk out girls” defending her choice of career, and a feminist telling another woman how to live her life.

There were shades of the JP - Cathy Newman debate to this, with the feminist coming across as completely unhinged to the point where it became a bit cringeworthy. The darts girl said it was a job she loved doing, it pays well, it’s not demeaning and she’s never asked or forced to do anything she doesn’t want to do, and she gets to look stunning each night and walk on stage in front of an adoring audience.

Feminist girl was then given her turn to respond, and immediately launched in to an angry diatribe about “we’re women thank you very much, not girls” blah blah. I’m not sure if these modern feminists are even capable of critical thinking, it’s so predictable. She then spent the rest of her time trying to tell an adult women that she’s not allowed her own free choice in life. Darts girl asked the feminist what her job was, feminist say she would rather not disclose that information. When pressed by the presenter, she sheepishly said she was a yoga instructor.

Feminism isn’t coming across well in public debates, it’s almost as if their talking points don’t hold up to scrutiny. Can’t help but wonder if they’ll close ranks and stop participating in public forums where they have to defend their ideology, because they seem entirely incapable of doing so.

Are there even any intellectual feminists out there? Because all I ever see is people who graduated from Tumblr University, they all sound the same, present the same straw man arguments and sound bytes, and cannot defend their position when called upon. They don’t appear to be well-read and seem to get their information from tweets. The only logical conclusion I can draw is that they’re all full of shit. Anita Sarkeesian, Cathy Newman, etc. I cannot respect the intelligence of these people, it’s like listening to a teenager arguing with their parents. I cannot wait until society grows tired of their nonsense.

Thank You. Do you have a link to the program?

[–]DigitalisEdible 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s on BBC iPlayer but I would assume the content won’t play outside of the UK unless you’re using a proxy or something. Here is the link :

The walk on girls piece is towards the end I believe, maybe the last half hour or so. And the discussion I referred to was quite brief, probably less than five minutes of the overall segment. Prior to this they also had a former walk on girl (now manager) talk about the ban, I think that’s worth a listen too.

Any feminist that has critical thinking skills is no longer a feminist.

Much better titles:

Women infighting is resolved when feminists appeal to authority figures.

Or

I'm telling dad!

It's weird how feminists are quite steadily denying women the power of their sexuality.

Good point

I don't agree with the following, but as a thought experiment I will continue. If you were in HR and your task was to minimize the risk of law suits, wouldn't your best bet be to hire only straight, white men (In the US)? This thought experiment assumes only SWM (straight white men) applied for the jobs.

SWM have practically zero legal standing when it comes to discrimination law suits, if it were strictly SWM, you would have almost zero change of a sexual allegations besides the possibility of co-workers ragging on each other. You wouldn't have to worry about race lawsuits if every employee is white. You would never have to worry about bathroom rights issues, maternity leave, etc..

I obviously do not advocate any company doing this. I am just looking for a reasonable discussion.

Hire a woman, hire a lawsuit.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But if you don't hire them then you also get a lawsuit.

[–]desderon 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Then you'll have the USA government threatening you with a fine for discriminatory practices.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not if you have bona-fide requirements. I have to be able to lift 65lbs by my self.

[+]ThreeEyedSnake1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

What if you can prove that no one other than SWMs applied for the jobs? It is hypothetical anyways.

[–]desderon 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It means you are creating an environment that is scaring the strong and independent women and you should be punished by daddy government.

For technical companies, most women there are hired as part of useless HR or because the company need to fulfil a diversity quota. It is rare that a woman (particularly white women) actually have any demonstrable technical skill.

If you hire only straight white males and maybe a sprinkling of asian women (indian, chinese, korean, japanese etc) you have a higher chance of a productive workforce and less lawsuit issues.

[+]ThreeEyedSnake1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Fair point, but what if only SWM applied for the jobs? Hypothetically speaking

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not a lawyer, but there are ways. Ask a personality quiz.

[–]Dnile1000BC 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then, thankfully, it will come down to merit.

[–]baggyrabbit 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But what’s really insulting to women is the patronising assumption that, like children, they need to be told what jobs are unsuitable.

Exactly!
