yes, even being accused of murder does not get as much hate and actual threat of retaliation as a sex crime.

I'm a fan of the accused remaining anonymous for any crime absent threat to the health and well being of the public ( until conviction, mind you ).

In today's "rush to judgement" environment, protecting the accused must be a priority to any society that values the ideals of justice and law.

No, absolutely not. The last bastion of fairness in the justice system is open courts with an observable, known, process. Secrecy should not be anywhere near our courts. The courts should be under a public microscope.

Yes, publicity in court cases can be bad. But the worst publicity is nowhere near as bad as a system where the names aren't public. Thankfully our Founding Fathers knew that and put those requirements all over our Constitution.

Edit: I see now this is a stickied post so it will likely draw a lot of attention. Here's what I'm offering, as an attorney, college professor of Constitutional issues, and volunteer civics educator: Tell me what law you want to pass regarding making the accused anonymous that you think will fix the problem of the "court of public opinion" and I will take your ideal law and show you both why it will be (1) ineffective and (2) actually harmful to the cause of justice. If you propose one that won't be those things I will happily reply that your law is a good idea. Reply below my comment.

If it's going to be argued that involvement in a sex crime investigation is so culturally overloaded that the accuser deserves the protection of anonymity, then an equally strong (if not stronger) case can be made to protect the accused as well.

I would be okay with allowing this anonymity to be breached in extreme cases where the accused (or accuser) is believed to be an explicit credible threat to others.

Assuming this is in America... Again this is a gray area from a law perspective. Is the accused innocent until proven guilty, yes. Do the police have an obligation to release certain details to see if multiple other victims exist once charges are filed? Also yes.

I understand that men have died in prison from false accusations, but serial killers really ruin it for us. I will always believe in a solid chain of evidence determining guilt though. A judge and jury should determine a death sentence, not the guards, not the prisoners, and certainly not the mob.

Of course they should, its pretty obvious that until it has been proved that they have done what they are being accused of they should not have any mark on their name or career.
