If it's going to be argued that involvement in a sex crime investigation is so culturally overloaded that the accuser deserves the protection of anonymity, then an equally strong (if not stronger) case can be made to protect the accused as well.
I would be okay with allowing this anonymity to be breached in extreme cases where the accused (or accuser) is believed to be an explicit credible threat to others.
FYI the names of victims/accusers are not anonymous in sex crimes.
"FYI" This discussion is usually understood to refer to the press and such not publishing the identities of accusers/alleged victims, often as a matter of editorial policy, but occasionally due to laws against it (e.g., when the person is underage).
It is not a suggestion that actual judicial anonymity or that violating the rights of the accused to confront/question their accuser is justifiable.
Except the victim isn't faced with the system coming down on them, a prospect that means the accused benefits greatly from a public trial.
We're not talking about trying cases in some secret sex dungeon Star Chamber, bruv. It would presumably be optional for the individuals to choose to waive their own protection if they thought the publicity would be helpful.
Such restrictions would be not only ineffective at preventing the "court of public opinion" but would also substantially harm justice in the courts.
I'd ask you to expand on this, but based on later comments you still seem to think this is about judicial anonymity rather than civil privacy.
Except where it is, as several here are suggesting.
A quick "sorry, meant to reply to someone else" would've saves us both some time.
I can only suspect that you hold this opinion because you are naive about how the courts actually work. Saying it should be up to the accused to decide whether proceedings are public, and thinking that they will actually get that choice, is a stupendously ignorant idea.
Go talk to someone who has said that if that's what you want to talk about. That is not what's being discussed and you have acknowledged.that you know that's not what I'm talking about.
Meanwhile in a back room a defendant is screaming for a lawyer and a public trial.
Again, not talking about sex dungeon Star Chamber trials.

Resurrecting a two day old thread and still haven't read the top level comment.
It's a bold move, Cotton, let's see how it works out for him.
