Anyone who would kill their kids shouldn't have custody. Sounds like the courts made the right call. I only wish it had happened in time to save the kids.

Yea, while losing custody sucks...this guy deserves his own place in he'll for his actions. What did his kids do?

There was, and possibly still is, a term in English law: "Whilst the balance of the mind was disturbed." And, quite often, the balance of the mind can be very severely disturbed. What actions like this should do - but do not seem to do - is cause the authorities to investigate what caused the person to do this and take steps to make sure it doesn't happen to anybody else.
