Joint finances

I've done it before in a pre RP LTR. In a practical sense it works fine. We were paying off a house together. Paid ourselves a spending allowance to do what we wanted and pooled the rest.

All food, bills and regular expenses came out of the treasury.

Things like nights out, new clothes and beers etc came out of the allowance.

If you can find a way to maintain a level of freedom and you're on similar incomes and spending levels then why not?

I've always suggested it as having a joint set of checking and savings accounts for bills, food, vacations, etc. But 100% have separate accounts for your own discretionary spending and saving.

However, ANY female I've said this even in front of...goes off about 1) cheating, 2) man's responsibility to provide for a woman, 3) man's inability to control impulse buys on "stupid things like tools and TVs".

So I stopped suggesting a real solution and instead of asked by a buddy or couple, I always say "keep it 100% separate and split bills like roommates would".

Don't do joint accounts.

Joint accounts are fine if you are married and she is working. For paying for bills and saving for shared things like vacations.

From experience, you should have separate accounts for discretionary funds, things like food, impulse purchases, etc. This way no one worries about the dumb stuff the other is buying with whatever you have budgeted to buy this stuff.
