I can sorta see where they're coming from, given the girl was only 16 and probably very naive, but I'm also amazed that this was able to happen in the first place.

She obviously knew the couple in question given she maintained contact after giving the baby up, so it wasn't her dropping the baby off at a police or fire station anonymously. This means that while she was pregnant, she received attention from the couple, likely in the form of financial support, to ensure the baby didn't have issues prior to birth. She enjoyed that support, and then when it ended she realized it was about the baby, not her, and her who had an issue with it.

So, on her brain, the baby equals attention, the kind of attention she likes, so she took the baby back hoping to receive more of the same, and then we get teenager stupidity coming into the mix. Someone can't handle certain responsibilities, loses their temper, and now we have a dead baby.

There's enough collective stupidity to go around. The teenagers parents for not teaching safe sex, the teens for not using safe sex, the gay couple for letting her take the baby back, it's just a collection of bad decisions that ends in tragedy. However, claiming the teenagers were "just children themselves" is part of the problem. I've worked with teenagers, and most are incredibly smart, just naive. By saying they're children and don't understand their actions, you're not letting them face the consequences of terrible, terrible decisions.

You know, like getting knocked up in the first place.
