When investigators confronted Harmon, she admitted that the allegations were false. It is not known what prompted her to report the hoax.

She was arrested in March for the misdemeanour offence of false report to a police officer, but officials decided to seek more charges. β€œThe more we have looked at what happened in this case, and considered the harm it caused, and certainly could have caused, we believe what she did fits the elements of these higher charges,” Grayson County District Attorney Joe Brown said in a statement.

β€œWhat she did was very serious, and we believe it was felony conduct.”

If convicted, Harmon faces up to 32 years in prison.

Justice.

I would love to know why she did this. What could she hope to accomplish? Innocent men in jail? The motivaltion to do something like this is beyond me. I hope she enjoys her stint in prison. She can be some fat dyke's girl toy.

[–]TFWnoLTR1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

Most likely she just wanted attention and sympathy and thought convincing others that she was some traumatized victim was the best way to achieve that

[–]former_Democrat1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Well, being a traumatized victim is in fashion these days...

[–]Throwaway69716971 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've met people who've done similar, although somewhat less serious things. In fact I was the victim of someone like this. They don't care about who gets wrongfully punished for their false accusations, that probably never even crosses their mind. They only care about getting attention and 'sympathy'. They want a free ride, to be given more than others, to be taken care of better than others, to be 'sympathized' with more than others. Why? Because deep down, for whatever reason, they truly believe they deserve special treatment, and they will do anything to get it, even ruin someone else's reputation, potentially even their entire life. They act as though others should feel guilty for not giving them enough 'sympathy' while feeling zero guilt themselves. Now I know the word is overused nowadays, but they are sociopaths. Its not about harming others, it's about benefiting themselves regardless of whether or not others are harmed.

In today's world these tactics are becoming more and more common. They manipulate situations to look like the victim, when in reality they are the villain. Be wary of anybody who seeks to manipulate the guilt and/or sympathy of others, or to make victimhood the cornerstone of their identity. True victims don't go out of their way to induce guilt and seek 'sympathy'.

The true victims are the ones who have their emotions so easily manipulated by those who merely claim to be victims.

[–]dukunt 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hope she likes munching carpet. I wonder if racism was a driving force at all? Or was accusing black men just more believable in her mind?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

In her mind, putting an innocent man in jail (or in this particular case, 3 innocent men) is just collateral damage towards the promised land of sympathy and attention.

How would she get any money from staging something like that?

[–]Jex117 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

Mattress girl is one rich bitch because of her false rape allegation.

[–]mclellac1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (20 children) | Copy Link

She's rich? Source? Where did the money come from?

[–]Jex117 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Speaking fees. She does talks at Universities and Expos. She's laid the foundation for an entire career from her mattress.

http://www.emmasulkowicz.com/biocv/

[–]mclellac1 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (17 children) | Copy Link

I highly doubt she gets paid very much for each speaking event.

I'd be surprised if it netted her 10k a year.

I don't see how she got rich off of it.

[–]Jex117 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

She's been the keynote speaker for a number of events - being an invited speaker isn't like getting a job at walmart. There isn't a set wage. They're requested by the university, who inquires as to their speaking fee. They set their own price.

Also she's been doing numerous art expos - her art is naturally all about being a rape survivor.

https://nowtoronto.com/art-and-books/art/mattress-performance-artist-emma-sulkowicz-not-done-making-art-about-rape/

https://news.artnet.com/art-world/emma-sulkowicz-ship-is-sinking-976988

[–]mclellac1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (15 children) | Copy Link

An average price for a speaker is $1k, and travel expenses. I highly doubt she's getting anything way beyond the average. As far as her art, nobody knows how much she gets from that, but again, not enough to make her wealthy by any means.

[–]dukunt 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It did lead to her stint in porn. I doubt it's made her much money tho. As feminists will tell you 'it's her way of grieving.' Whatever.

[+][deleted] -22 points-21 points-20 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

She is female

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]lazy-dude 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I somewhat understand what he is saying. I never hear males pulling this shit and pretending to be raped.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Of course. Female rape privilege son. You think that a man who claims this would cause an uproar? Of course not.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I understand that she can do it because she's female, but i don't believe her female-ness literally compelled her to do it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

She learned how to manipulate others based on her female nature. Bam!

[–]dukunt 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Some truth to this. We do tend to play towards the strengths of our gender. Men have strengh so we can physically fight and it is more accepted for men to fight. Women have to resort to being manipulative and prefer to let the law and the courts do their fighting for them.

If you piss off a guy enough be prepared to get punched. If you piss off a women enough she's coming after you with everything at her disposal and will fuck you up beyond belief and ruin your life.

I'd rather have Mike Tyson mad at me than that bitch he was married to.

She considered someone else's life as forfeit so that she could benefit. It doesn't matter who she felt ok to throw under the bus or how she thought she could gain...she valued her happiness/well-being over another's life.

It's an eff'd up thing to find an ideal punishment for her. Someone falsely convicted would have served serious time, their lives ruined.

Does she need to be the example of why you don't scream rape for attention? Rape is a fucked up, serious crime. And she went the extra mile to say it was black guys. Fuk her. She could have destroyed people's lives looking for attention.

There needs to be a precedent. You don't scream fire in a theater or bomb on an airplane w/o repercussions. I don't know what they should be in this case aside from serious (and well known) enough to illustrate a point.

But no one at this point no one was directly hurt. And she clearly needs fuk'n help. But this can't be a slap on the wrist shit; what she did was fuk'd up and could have had lifelong consequences. I say maximum sentence w/ definite possibility for early parole. Set a bar for what will happen for calling wolf...but get her some help.

[+]Pimppit -11 points-10 points-9 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I agree with your sentiment. No one got hurt, arrested, or even accused from this. So let's not treat it like something actually did happen.

[–]Gandzalf 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I agree with your sentiment. No one got hurt, arrested, or even accused from this. So let's not treat it like something actually did happen.

Yeah sure. If you sped through a school zone at 80mph, just as school let out, but nobody got hurt, it's not a problem right?

[–]Pimppit -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

She didn't speed through the school zone, she just told everyone she was going to do so.

Remember, she didn't actually accuse anybody in particular, her 3 black men were just vague nobody's. That's the difference here.

[–]Gandzalf 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Remember, she didn't actually accuse anybody in particular, her 3 black men were just vague nobody's. That's the difference here.

Except the phrase white woman raped by three black men is usually enough to put any random black dude at risk, especially in today's political climate. So yeah, she needs to go down hard. White women have done that "a black man attacked me" bullshit far too many times, and with devastating results, for shit like this to go unpunished.

[–]mr_jiffy -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

β€œThe more we have looked at what happened in this case, and considered the harm it caused, and certainly could have caused, we believe what she did fits the elements of these higher charges,”

He's asking what damage could it have caused. Let's say she never planned on pointing to any black men in particular and just wanted attention, what damage could it have charged, other than our tax dollars and time?

[–]Gandzalf 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I get that literally no harm was done to anyone. We can agree on that. Imagine for a moment a white woman, living in some small rural town in the Mid West, claims that some Muslim raped her. That being a small town, stories travel quickly.

Now also imagine that a few of the local good ole boys hear that some muslim raped this white woman, and there ain't but a handful of brown men in that town. She named no one, she asked nobody to attack anyone else, she just made a claim. While the authorities sort it out and realize she's lying, a lot can happen to the few brown men living in that town.

Sure, this might seem like a stretch, but when someone's actions puts others in potential danger, that's very serious. If you're a black dude living in a small town, full of people with minds to match, hearing that story would be pretty horrifying.

[–]mr_jiffy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for taking the time to explain that. It makes sense and I see what your point is.

[–]Pimppit -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You don't get it. It only went as far as "random black dude". So tell me then, is "random black dude" going to be the plaintiff? Who is the plaintiff for spending 33 years in prison? THERE ISNT ONE

[–]Gandzalf 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You're not very smart, are you? There is not going to be a trial for a random black dude; that's pretty obvious. If someone throws broken bottles into a playground sandbox, but no one gets injured, does the sandbox or a random parent take them to court? No, the state does. The state punishes so-called victimless crimes.

Speech that can be deemed to have the potential to incite violence can, and should be punished. If you cannot understand that simple concept, then there isn't much I can tell you.

[–]Pimppit -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Haha "you're not very smart are you" << didn't get past that. Take care random Reddit boy.

[–]Gandzalf 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's cute. You sound upset. You made your point, and I made mine. It's not that big a deal.

[–]0x2412 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not sure why you're being down voted. No one else was involved, 32 years for this is excessive. think about it like this, given What we know, what if this was your own daughter would you still plead max sentences or psychiatric help?

[–]Pimppit -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Being downvoted because that's how Reddit works. lol

[–]dtabitt 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is not known what prompted her to report the hoax.

Is "being a woman" a good enough reason?

[+]relish19221 points 8 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Wait... How does rape allegations get you more years in jail then the actual crime of rape?

[–]WilliamBott 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It didn't "get" her more years. 32 years is the maximum sentence. Rape has a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole almost anywhere you go.

I find it incredibly fascinating that someone would make up such a big lie.

What was her reasoning?

What had gone on in her life to cause her to do that?

What did she think would happen?

[–]Throwaway69716971 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Shes a sociopath who thought she deserved special treatment and attention and this was her way of trying to get it. It probably works a lot more than you think. They claim to be victims when in reality they are the villain. Textbook case.

[–]drwuzer 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What had gone on in her life to cause her to do that?

I'm going to guess blacked out drunk, woke up naked in an alley, needed an excuse for going missing and ending up naked.

Or - Crazy. One of those. Possibly both.

[–]HuntTheHunter12 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did u even read it? She wouldn't have done what she did to make an excuse why she woke up late from being blacked out. She inflicted wounds on herself, staged a crime scene, and ran into a church to report it and get attention/"help"

What a quick way to fuck your life up. Going out on a limb here, but I'm gonna guess something probably isn't ok and she could use some help.

I'm gonna guess something probably isn't ok and she could use some help.

I'd say the same about most people who flip out and murder people, but the law applies equally to all (at least on paper).

If we could rehabilitate all offenders, that would be fantastic, but unless that's gonna be a unilateral thing, then I'm afraid she's getting no special treatment.

ELI5. Why is it that whenever the culprit is white we claim he/she might be having psychological/mental problems but we never claim this for non white criminals.

[–]12InchesOfSlave 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

that depends entirely on who you ask

I was going to reference that story, but since it happened quite a while back, there aren't really any links to reference on Reddit. You know as well as I do, what those comments would look like.

Also, don't compare a properly written news article meant for general public consumption, to the unfiltered vitriol which comes from the minds of anonymous Redditors.

[–]Games_sans_frontiers 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Did anybody else find the use of the word "hoax" in the article to describe what she did seem inappropriate? It trivialises it somewhat.

[–]-leeson 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Felt the same way. This wasn't a "hoax" it was a blatant and disgusting lie.

[–]dumnem 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

..wait..

Did she actually accuse someone? I didn't read the article as I'm lazy and hate clickbait. If all she did was run in there partially undressed and claim she was raped I mean whatever, get her help. But if she actually accused someone that's a WAY, WAY bigger deal.

[–]-leeson 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I misspoke, I apologize- I had read an article previous to this and took the "accused three black men" as being three named men, not just her saying it was three men. So luckily, no, she didn't take it far enough to destroy someone else in her lies. But it's still super fucked up (which I know you aren't arguing).
