Michael Richards was broken by a heckler and somehow thought an audience of black people were going to laugh at him calling the guy the n word.

He thought he was being funny, everyone else knew it was a really bad choice, and the media took it and ran. He received death threats from people and had to go into hiding. When he apologized - read, APOLOGIZED for going too far, nobody gave a shit and he just went about being irrelevant.

Kathy Griffin made a stupid choice, a shitload of people found it unfunny and in poor taste. Now she will go through the Michael Richards treatment. I'll bet most people were ok with him going down for the N word in a stand-up routine while actively being heckled. An un-antagonized Kathy Griffin makes the conscious decision not in the heat of the moment to do what she did and people will rush to her defense because they hate Donald Trump.

I think she could have kept hammering the 'i'm a comic' angle. You are free to make fun of stuff if you're trying to be funny, the problem was that it didn't seem like she was making a joke that just fell short, because that shit happens sometimes. No, she was making a political statement and laughter wasn't the end goal whatsoever.

I can't help but focus on how ridiculous it is that she didn't even consider this would backfire. It shows that celebs like this that exist in a bubble have no idea how to look at themselves as a business (which they by all means are) and should keep their unfounded political opinions to themselves
