Trigger warning: sexual assault, stalking.

I'm a university STEM student in a program that is unfortunately 80-85% men. This past semester a boy took an 'interest' in me. He would tell me about how he saw me in my neighborhood (that apparently he lives in too), goes on my social media to find my location, etc.

I ignored it because he was awkward and I didn't feel threatened. But, on Thursday this behavior cumulated into him trying to touch me. During a group assignment in class, he told me I had something on my shirt and then tried to grab my breasts. Luckily, I jumped back before he could succeed.

The entire incident has made me feel dirty and gross. When women are warned of things like this happening, it always takes place at some dark party or bar. I naively thought that school- especially in the middle of a busy class- would be a 'safe place' for me. It wasn't. I feel unsafe that the kid already had a pattern of following my activity outside of class.

Then there's a different part of me that thinks I'm overreacting because he attempted to touch me, but didn't succeed. Why am I so bothered by something that technically didn't happen?

Both this incident/the stalking have been reported to the university and are being investigated. That makes me feel a bit better, but I am still upset.

Where do I go from here? I feel like I'm not in control of my emotions. I feel guilty using any 'sexual assault' survivor resources because- while the stalking did happen- I prevented him from touching me.

I'm rambling, I'm sorry. I just need a direction. I feel lost.

And from the comments

Does your university have a counselor that you can speak with?

Yes they do, I just feel 'guilty' using their resources since I technically wasn't assaulted. I know that's silly, but part of me feels like I'm overreacting to the situation.

Go ahead and make an appointment with the counselor. This kind of thing is exactly what counselors are for. The specifics of what happened to you don't matter, what matters is your mental state.

Listen to your instincts. Don't dismiss this just because his attempt was foiled by your quick reflexes. He might try again. Go see the counsellor. Block him on social media. Keep a log of events.

now, the guy very well may be a creeper. A horrible human, but let's take a look at parts of this.

I'm a university STEM student in a program that is unfortunately 80-85% men.

why is this unfortunate? Is something being 80% men evil? I don't get it.

He would tell me about how he saw me in my neighborhood (that apparently he lives in too)

sounds like small talk to me...

I ignored it because he was awkward

full stop. The guy is a STEM beta and doesn't do it for OP. How dare he speak to her?

During a group assignment in class, he told me I had something on my shirt and then tried to grab my breasts. Luckily, I jumped back before he could succeed.

Horrible. Seriously, I mean this. The guy if he did this is not a good human.

HOWEVER, this isn't sexual assault. At worse it is attempted sexual assault, and even then, she would have to prove it. Was there something on her shirt?

. I naively thought that school- especially in the middle of a busy class- would be a 'safe place' for me. It wasn't.

beta attempts to grab girl's boobs = every man is a rapist.

Yeah this totally isn't fear mongering lol

I feel unsafe that the kid already had a pattern of following my activity outside of class.

This is the first time she mentions stalking, where did that statement come from?

Both this incident/the stalking have been reported to the university and are being investigated. That makes me feel a bit better, but I am still upset.

So man = life ruined and she feels it isn't enough for from what I can tell was a guy being awkward and (reportedly) attempting to grab her boobs.

He might try again. Go see the counsellor. Block him on social media.

Or... Tell the nerd you aren't interested in him and tell him to fuck off...

IDK, what do you guys think?
