I believe what the story is suggesting is that Brando, the actor not his character, did things in the scene that she did not know about in advance or consent to.

Yes the scene does depict rape, that's not the issue. The issue is during the shooting of the scene, were things done to her that she didn't approve of. If so, does that then cross the line of dramatic rape to actual rape?

People are spending too much time reading headlines and tweets from people who read headlines, and not enough time reading what Bertolucci actually said.

The rape scene was in the script from the start, everyone was aware that was being filmed at that time. What Bertolucci is talking about Brando and him not telling Maria Schneider about was the idea to grab a handful of butter to use during the scene.

This "controversy" is literally about not warning an actress that she was going to have butter smeared on her leg. At least that's what the quote is about, the uproar is from a bunch of people who couldn't be bothered to actually read the quote, and in their minds immediately started fabricating actor-on-actress rape scenes in their minds.

There is clearly a serious problem with higher education, when people are referencing children's stories -- made up tales with talking animals -- to make points about law in the real world.
