A haka is part of an older form of honor-based tribal skirmishing. It's an exotic version of the kind of thuggish posturing you can find at closing time outside your neighborhood bar - What are you lookin' at? You lookin' at me? You wanna make something of it? Come here and say that to my face.

The British redcoats, representing a more calculated, industrial age form of warfare, lined up against the haka, waited for the order to pull their triggers, and blasted the Maoris into the status of a dysfunctional minority in their own country. And then the new regime turned the haka into a ceremonial. The British did something similar once they finally defeated the Highland Scots - invented a ceremonial with kilts and bagpipes.

And now, in some quirk of international rugby administration, the teams from New Zealand and some of the other South Pacific nations have a special dispensation to perform their haka before every game. And the middle class rugby fans, who'd be in contempt of gangs of young men in their own societies screaming at each other and making threatening gestures, stand respectfully for the haka because it's ABORIGINAL CULTURE.

Other teams don't get their own cheer routine, they just get their national anthem. For a powerful display of masculinity and social cohesion, watch the Welsh singing their national anthem before a rugby game - that'll make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
