The idea is that marriage is a partnership; one works while the other builds the home. To be fair, running a house and taking care of the life chores can take quite a bit of time, so having one spouse field the busy work while the other earns the money makes sense to some folks.

Once divorced, the spouse who stayed home and didn't work on their earning potential is disadvantaged because of the arrangement, so alimony is awarded to offset this. This is where things get weird though, as many states can and do award "Forever alimony", whereas the previously disadvantaged spouse is given a lifetime of welfare at the expense of the other former spouse who has to pay him/her until his/her death.

It's insanity.

In a sane world, alimony would be temporary and graduated; just long enough for the previous homemaker to earn a degree or cert and begin sustaining themselves. Instead, priority is given to the whole notion of "life style they're used to", with no regard given to the earning partner's lifestyle ( which is often severely compromised due to support TWO households ).

Usually the "home maker" is a woman, while the earner is a man. And in this, another facet of our legal system and society come into play; the law treats women more favorably than men, resulting in more generous outcomes. Once you flip the script, the man is treated with a greater degree of scrutiny and if alimony is even awarded, he's pushed to become self sustaining and is criticized as being a mooch.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to coupling and mating, so my advice? Never get married. Avoid it at all costs.

I'll try to ELI:5 this for you Timmy.

For a long time people around the world thought of women as only able to raise families. Thankfully that time has passed by, and women can now do anything they like.

But our laws haven't caught up to society. So women are still treated as if they need protection by the law, for marriage.

This is why Alimony exist. To support women of old when the man would run away, leaving her unable to survive. i.E women traded marriage for the guarantee of lifelong up keeping. Since women are no longer required by society to do this. It is no longer a necessity.

Also know that no matter what you have to pay for child support. That is not alimony.

I think it was at one point designed to protect women from being trapped in a situation where they couldn't leave a terrible husband. You can't just go live on your own if you have no job experience over the last 10 years and no money of your own.

Today however, it makes no sense and I wouldn't recommend anyone getting married without a rock solid prenup. There's no good reason to have someone stay at home for a long period of time.

Because marriage is nothing but a trap for men.

It was originally created as a convenience, and has never been about love.

Marriage's entire purpose today is for women to gain financial security, even in the event of divorce.
