Why Men are Willing to be 'White Knights'

I just had some thoughts on male feminists and why so many young men are willing to “white knight”.

Take the average male feminist, young mid-to-late 20’s, nerdy, not very physically active; the stereotypical beta male. From what I’ve seen, these seem to form the majority of the male feminist demographic. But why is that? Feminism, especially its modern 3rd Wave incarnation, has maligned men and decried modern gamer culture as misogynistic and sexist. Why would so many young men willingly attach the label to themselves? Setting aside all conceptions of “pandering for the pussy”, I think I arrived at an explanation as to why:

Feminism allows these young men the illusion of power.

Allow me to explain; bear in mind first that this is based on my own experience and view of not only gamers and feminism. I would love nothing more than to have a discussion with you about the veracity of my model, regardless of where you fall on the spectrum regarding the MRM.

I am the stereotypical beta male that I presented above: nerdy and physically inactive; the last word I would ever use to describe myself is ‘threatening’. But according to feminists, especially modern cultural critics like Anita Sarkeesian, I am dangerous. By sheer virtue of enjoying video games (and I am not much of a gamer, mind you), I am objectifying women. By sheer dint of being no more than what I am, my geeky beta-self, I am contributing to the oppression of women.

This is a seductive line of reasoning for two reasons:

• It speaks to the protective instinct that men have towards women.
• It gives young men who are not masculine in the traditional sense a sense of power and hyper-agency.

So what do you think? Is there something to my thesis, or am I completely off base?
