Do not be conned by hiding it behind gender neutral language such as "human shield".

If it was actual "human shield" there would not be any form of gender bias or age bias.

This is Male Disposability in action with Institutionalised Media Misandry - they use the term male/men/boys and see no bias in the actions of others or in their own lack of insight.

You know, there's a possibility that the reason why the headline is this way is because if it read:

ISIS kills hundreds of men in Mosul area, source says

The assumption might be that the men were combatants and that they were killed in action and not murdered as hostages.

Even changing it to:

ISIS kills hundreds of men and boys in Mosul area, source says

I'm willing to bet the implication would still be that they were combatants, just that some of the combatants were minors.

So this implies that only by giving it the headline:

ISIS kills hundreds in Mosul area, source says

The average read might be tempted to read on and find out the whole story on the assumption that women and girls were included in the victims.

And what that might say about our culture I leave to you to draw your own conclusions ...
