It also helps protect against penile cancer and genital warts. And it stop men from spreading HPV to women where it causes cervical cancer.

Preventing penile cancer is one of the arguments people use to try and justify circumcision of non-consenting boy children. It was never a good argument (because penile cancer is rare and only found in older men) but with the advent of the HPV vaccine it really falls down.

Another one for the Political Agenda for International Men's day 2016 Parliamentary debate.

Will be a nice nugget for the media to chew on and not be able to spit out with disgust!

PS. Might be an idea to point Mike Buchanan to this issue as it will be easier to get media attention on this nice juicy nugget over his plans to protest outside the Royal Courts of Justice when they are CLOSED.

A protest in Parliament Square demanding Equality of vaccination (Or Even Outside the Dept of Health) opens the door for others to see men's rights as relevant and nort just a bunch of whack jobs with tiny willies!

Here in Australia, we've been vaccinating boys against HPV for about 3.5 years now. We just need more countries, including the UK, to follow our lead.

The good news is studies have found that even vaccinating only girls still leads to a substantial reduction in these cancers in boys, simply because most of the population is heterosexual so vaccinating girls reduces the spread of the infection to boys as well.

But we really do need to vaccinate both boys and girls to prevent as many cases of cancer as possible and perhaps eventually eradicate HPV itself the way smallpox was eradicated. Measles is no longer endemic in western countries and eradicating chickenpox is now on the horizon, so an end to HPV is entirely possible in coming decades.

While HPV is thought to be common nobody knows how common because doctors consider it such a minor type of infection they don't report it.

Quote from CDC Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2014 http://www.cdc.gov/std/stats14/surv-2014-print.pdf

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Over 40 distinct types can infect the genital tract; about 90% of infections are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously within two years. However, persistent infection with some HPV types can cause cancer and genital warts.

So if nothing is done treatment wise after two years 5% can develop a minor form of cancer and 5% can develop unsightly warts.

According to Diane Harper one of the vaccine developers it is pointless to give it too anyone that is too young as the protection will have worn off by the time they become sexually active.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Harper#Questioning_the_safety_and_efficacy_of_HPV_vaccines

Gardasil and Cervarix have only been shown to last for 5 and 9.4 years respectively

There is currently a pap smear test that is considered to be near 100% detection for all types of HPV. Vaccines are considered to be effective against a limited number of HPV types.

This report by the CDC showing syphilis on the rise is much more concerning as that is a much more dangerous type of infection. http://www.cdc.gov/std/stats14/std-trends-508.pdf

Men should get it too. Some jurisdictions offer it to men.

Archive.

No shite, Sherlock!

According to the CDC, men are 40% of possible HPV-related cancers in the US, and 40% of of the cases that can be prevented with common vaccines.

And these numbers are pre-vaccine (to wit: Gardasil is available since 2006 at best).

.

40% male, and only girls get the vaccine.

If there ever is a 'vaccine' against prostate cancer, they'll give it to girls first.
