People that injure themselves for insurance fraud is a well known phenomenon. The difference is, insurances are big companies with whole departments dedicated to defending against this every day, and the laws and policies are not too biased.

A man who is faced with something like this has no experience and no resources to deal with that, also a biased law against him, and often he isn't even informed of what is going on to make sure he can't defend himself.
