Personally I think she ran nearly entirely on her gender.
A talking point she pushed out hard was "most qualified."
To me being qualified is the bare minimum. It's not a compelling reason to vote for someone. If she had used "competent" then at least it would have honest for the low bar she set.
Her campaign slogan "I'm with her" reeked entirely of attempting to guilt voters into voting for her. Why on earth would I be compelled to vote for someone to represent me on the idea that "I'm with her"? What does that do for me.
As a politician she's obviously awful. As an administrator I've heard alright things. The problem outside of gender is that 'We the People' felt like another alright administration in a blatantly declining political system wasn't progress.
Trump through sheer instinct managed to find the 'pulse' of America that lined up with his own - mostly negative.
Hillary's instincts seemed to be to rely entirely on her political circle. Bernie, Trump, Obama, and even McCain who branded himself as a 'maverick' and she couldn't figure out how to come across as someone who wasn't a political insider.
And lastly I think it's dumb she ran on the idea of breaking the glass ceiling as much as she did. She was immediately politically elevated by her marriage. The idea that we're all supposed to not think about that or the idea that she never addressed staying married to him for political reasons is ludicrous.

Her Campaign was run like absolute shit. I personally had to deal with her Share Blue Shill army when I ran the Donald. The people on her team were absolute fucking retards.
Here's an example. The Hillary Clinton polling team 100% absolutely believed that African American males would vote for her in the same numbers as they voted for Obama.

it's clear he didn't endorse her, that he was simply given a serious threat and told to read a script or face the consequences.
