You know what's cowardly to me? Abusing people who are weaker than you. But anyways......

Incidentally, the reason Ronda Rousey was lambasted after she finally got her ass kicked was that she was a consistently sore winner. She completely disregarded the post-battle respect and fellowship common among male fighters.

I was a fan of Rousey for a while and appreciated her confidence and her refusing to respect her trash-talking opponents who have done nothing to earn her respect. When someone like Bethe Correira has never beaten a quality opponent and starts talking shit the moment the fight is announced, she deserves nothing from Rousey, and I'm glad Ronda knocked her out in seconds.

But Ronda started acting like EVERY opponent was a scumbag. Holly Holm was friendly and polite, and Rousey made up some lies about her and pushed her during faceoff at the weigh-ins. Even this wouldn't be so bad, but the complete lack of respect after the loss is when I stopped being a fan.

You want to talk a big game, that's fine... but if you lose, you better take it like the champion that you claim to be. Not run and hide and cry about it.

Wow, just watched the clip - blatant cheating by Solo by insisting on changing her gloves right before the last penalty. No wonder the Swedish player was laughing at her.

[–]chocoboat -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's not cheating... it's doing whatever is allowed within the rules to try to win the game. Just like how Sweden did by playing for the tie.

Both teams played to win, and there was nothing disrespectful about anything that happened during the field. Solo's whiny complaints about the other team not playing into USA's strengths is pathetic though.

[–]JohnKimble111 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well it's disgraceful sportmanship. I'd bet everything I own that there was nothing wrong with the gloves.

[–]Stephen_Morgan 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's gamesmanship.

"The best team did not win today," said Solo

Wrong Ms Solo. On that day they clearly were the better team as the outcome demonstrates.

"They didn't play like we wanted them to. They're cowards!"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Obviously all athletes should be taught to emulate the grace and generosity of Roger Bannister and John Landy in their post race interviews in the Empire Games of 1954.

Soccer teams have been known to put eleven players behind the ball and run down the clock, figuring that their best chance is in the penalty shootout. If Sweden played that way I wouldn't blame the Americans for feeling aggrieved.

[–]ABC_Florida 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did anybody watch the game? Solo states, that they were sitting on the ball, and playing very defensive soccer. I don't like it either. I call it shitty football (it is not soccer to me). But calling them cowards is crazy. Unless there were reckless tackles or excessive force on the part of Sweden.

...SHOCKING

Smashing role model for sportswomanship.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure I understand. As far as I can gather, the Swedish team didn't cheat, so what exactly did they do that is cowardly?

[–]Black_caped_man 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Apparently they played defensively and "safe", would another play style have given them a clearer win? Who knows, all we know is that they did win.

I love the response from the Swedish coach though

It's okay to be a coward if you win.

It's very likely that they played strategically where the odds of winning would have been much lower if they played offense. Then again I know next to nothing about football.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not a football fan either, but I know enough to know that that's a good strategy. Isn't playing smart part of team sports? Sounds like this woman is being a sore loser.
