According to society, when men commit acts of violence, men--as a gender--are at fault. When women commit acts of violence, that individual woman (or her husband, or her father, or her troubled past, or her troubled marriage, or her difficult life circumstances...) are at fault--the entire gender is not blamed for her act of violence

That's why it's not uncommon to hear "men are rapist" or "men start wars" or "men are mass murderers" etc. but not "women kill children" or "women abuse children" or "women hire hitmen to kill their husbands"

I didn't read the article but I bet they'll also question whether she had depression or mental issues.

EDIT: hah! I must be psychic!!

Oldham said he wasn't aware if any mental health issues had played a role in the stabbings, but said the possibility would be explored during the investigation into the motive.

Of course not, femininity can't be toxic. This is obviously internalized misogyny.

What aspect of toxic femininity do you think this displays?

[–]andejoh[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Not sure that it displays any. I'm pretty sure that it probably shouldn't. The point you're entirely missed was this should be the same as when a man commits a heinous crime shouldn't be considered toxic masculinity.

She no more killed these children because she is a woman (you might make the argument she killed them because she was their mother and I don't know where that would lead as far as your question goes.) than Dylann Roof killing 9 people because he is a man. Gender should have nothing to do with it.

[–]Unconfidence -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It does. What we'd like is inconsequential. Men commit more violent crimes than women. We can cry Correlation =/= Causation all day, but at the end of that day we still have a gender-based disparity.

The idea behind toxic masculinity isn't any worse than the idea behind violent Islam, but the problem is when people with a pre-existing bias against those groups start deciding what is and isn't a bad aspect of that group's identity. In other words, the fact that misandrists have polluted the meaning of the term and used it to enact their misandry is not an indictment of the concept itself.

It does. What we'd like is inconsequential. Men commit more violent crimes than women.

And we know this because? We know men are charged and convicted of more violent crimes. We know domestic violence is perpetrated roughly equal when survey's are given, but are reported, prosecuted, sentenced, etc. a lot differently. Is a punch less violent than a punch that breaks a jaw? Is a punch that breaks a jaw less violent than a dozen punches that don't?

On mt very unscientific, very cursory research on mass stabbings, I found 1 instance of a mass stabbing by a woman (this story) and (maybe) another, which was a stabbing / shooting where the perpetrators are unknown.

If you look at the mathematical ratio, women have committed 100% of the mass stabbings so it must be a gender issue, right? It doesn't really matter what we would like to believe like whether mental illness played a part. The only thing that is relevant is gender.

I'm not basing my assertion off of statistics, because I understand that the statistics are flawed by our social bias against the very concept of female violence. However, living in a very violent place (#1 in murders for god knows how long) almost everyone I know will attest to that.

If DV perpetration rates show parity but overall crime stats, and my own personal and gathered experience all show overall greater levels of violence perpetrated by men, then I'm going to err on the side of thinking that maybe male disposability and other social shackles placed on men are having deeper effects than many want to admit.

I do not want to get trapped in the modern feminist hypocrisy of claiming individual perfection while also decrying social problems. Men have social issues which should be addressed, and I don't think we should pretend we're perfect snowflakes to hide from that.

[–]andejoh[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not saying that men are perfect. I'm saying that there is some debate as to whether there is a significant difference in the amount of violence perpetrated by each sex. In my personal experience women are more likely to signal their displeasure by hitting a man.

Maybe there are certain factors to consider. Maybe women are more likely to strike men because they don't believe that it will injure him so don't view it as violence. Something not being viewed as violence doesn't make it not so case in point infant circumcision.

Are the consequences of male violence more severe. I don't think you can question that. Are men more likely to be violent against other men? Again I don't think you can question that. Are women more likely to be violent against men? Again, that would be statistically correct. The disposability of men comes into play there.

Men cause more damage, true. Men are more violent, maybe. We give women enough passes on their violence.

It's a testament to the terrible state of discrimination against men that any of us should be able find anything positive in a mother murdering her children.

But that's what we've come to. Because the social narrative holds that men are fundamentally violent and sexist. And women are saints and victims. So every exception which disproves this bigoted myth becomes a macabre celebration.

[–]andejoh[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think it's a positive. I'm just pointing out a double standard. I would also suspect that if you looked at mass stabbings. I did a google search and quit after 4 pages, you might find that women commit more. I found 2. This one and another which was a mass shooting / stabbing and the sex of the perpetrator was unknown as of the writing.

Women do murder their children more often and if you limit itt to newborns within the first 24 hours of life, it's exclusively or nearly exclusively women. How does society approach that though? With compassion, she has every opportunity to avoid it from free contraception, to abortion, to adoption, to safe haven laws. She just has to leave it in a church, police station, hospital, or fire house. Heck, in one town in Indian they made baby drop off boxes.

Every now and again, they'll be a baby left at these places. That's one less baby killed. That's one less woman in prison with her life ruined. What if men's problems were treated with compassion?

It wasn't aimed at you in particular and it's not an attack of any kind on anyone who posts links to articles like this. It was a comment on how bad discrimination against men really is - that we're able to find anything positive in a mother murdering her children.
