Women are not oppressed, men are. Example: divorce court, homelessness and suicides. Enough said!

I sense a false dichotomy here. Why shouldn't both men and women be oppressed?

Edit: just wanted to add, this does not need to be a zero-sum game.

I sense a false dichotomy here. Why shouldn't both men and women be oppressed?

Oppression is a relative term rather than an absolute term. To be oppressed you must be oppressed relative to something else (they have something you don't with no valid claim why they have it and you don't).

It is possible for two groups to both be oppressed relative to the other, each having advantages over the other (this is actually how natural gender roles work). But since the feminist movement has removed oppression for women relative to men and men haven't had their oppression relative to women removed... It is accurate to question women's oppression.

There's nothing inherently wrong with saying women are oppressed in some areas, just as men are. It's the follow up belief held by most liberal news/blogs that men are the main cause and that men do not experience forms of discrimination that is frequently presented in those outlets.

Edit: I would argue men and women oppress their own genders much more than the male to female or vice versa.

The point is the bias, it's like with organisations like the BBC and the Guardian, they try to pass themselves off as 'balanced' in their news reporting but when you actually look at what they choose to report on and what they don't they're even more biased than their counterparts.

If they didn't try to pass themselves off as balanced journalists, I wouldn't have as much of an issue with it, because then I can put them in the same bin as Buzzfeed and Fox News. However people genuinely think they offer balanced reporting even though they're very selective about what they show to the public all the time.

There's nothing wrong with it if it is an accurate claim.

On the other hand:

1) Please enumerate any government-granted rights which men have and women do not have in equal or greater levels.

2) Please enumerate any government-enforced responsibilities which women bear which men do not bear in equal or greater levels.

I was strictly speaking of making the statement on it's own. The issue is the other side is rarely, if at all, presented. Legally speaking I feel men are vastly disadvantaged and socially women have it rougher in some states/countries more so than men. Since the men's side is rarely presented it creates an illusion that women have it much worse overall.

While neither side has it as good as the other believes, I'd take the social struggles over the legal consequences I potentially face as a male because I'm much more likely to get a lengthy prison sentence and the safety nets we have in place favor women over men should I fall on hard times.

Legally: no contest, men are oppressed relative to women.

Socially: I believe it's accurate for both to claim oppression relative to the other, not just women relative to men.

And I agree that social oppression is orders of magnitude less significant than legal oppression.

It's because the media only talks about women's issues. Everyone knows about the 0.70 wage gap. Few people outside the mra knows that 90+% of workplace deaths are men.

I doubt it would surprise anyone, though. They just come up with ways to rationalize it. "Oh well men are more attracted to risk."

Okay, yeah, risk—like running a fucking company?

"Oh heavens no! That's just oppression of women!"
