and that it "requires movement across state or national borders." Others are only "incorrect" if you use an incredibly expansive definition of human trafficking (i.e., one that includes all prostitution as sex trafficking).

I've had this talk with anti-trafficking advocates before. "If they're not being moved across state lines, isn't that just prostitution?" Then it is explained to me that it is trafficking because the women aren't selling sex of their own free will, and that even if they think they are, they aren't, because a man is behind it.

Basically, activists want to recharacterize prostitution as trafficking, so that not only will the woman not be held responsible for breaking the law, but you can put a man in jail for a much harsher crime than pimping.

Well that's nice of them.

I still think the best way to deal with the whole thing is make prostitution legal, tax it, and regulate the hell out of it. Use those taxes to fund the regulation and to stop people from coercing others into joining the sex trades and to prevent sex trafficking and human trafficking.

Prostitution being illegal doesn't stop people from becoming prostitutes, it just stops the state and law enforcement from helping them and ensures that they won't dare to ask for help when they need it most.

I agree. Feminists have a conniption when you suggest that a woman could ever sell sex of her own free will, however, even when legalized.

There was a somewhat related issue with EU countries trying to stop "trafficking," only most of the "trafficking victims" were young women who had moved from eastern Europe to western Europe on their own accord. A weekend of hooking in the west is enough money to support their families for a month.

Agreed.

Legalizing it would bring it to the same harsh light of day as any other industry. And the pimps and traffickers would have such a hard time trying to compete with legal methods their customer base would likely dry up, forcing them out of business.

I also think it would grant sex workers more ready access to health care which is vital given their line of work.

Yep, and it would take you all of 2 minutes on Google to find a dozen prostitutes in any European city, working independently and manging their own affaires quite happily.

DOJ people watch too many movies.

Sex trafficking the assault weapon of the sex industry where you mix sex slavery with prostitution.
