While it is ridiculous that many such dress codes only apply to men and we never see media shitstorms over it, this dress code is actually fairly sexist.

Ofcourse, there are a bunch of problems with dressing and court. Your testimony, or even guilt or innocence, will be partially determined by your dress sense and level of income you seem to have, which is bad. I'd say there is a case to be made that everyone who attends court as a witness, plaintiff, or defendent, should wear the same bland outfit. Probably a jumpsuit.

It shouldn't matter either way as far as I'm concerned and yes, frankly if I got dragged to court, I'd go there in plain clothes. I'd consider it a statement as an Anarchist that I don't believe in their system, if that would be enough to land me in jail then so be it.

I'd go further and make it so nobody can see the plaintiff, witness, or defendant, and use one of those voice manipulation things so that whenever they talk, everyone sounds like they're male.

this dress code is actually fairly sexist.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that Holmes’ rules don’t include any restrictions on men because, according to Holmes, men don’t need instructions on how to look professional.

Yes, that is pretty sexist. If you have to have a dress code, make it exactly the same for everybody. No exceptions based on gender at all, and the entire dress code should just be a list of what men have to wear. Then watch as the women complain about how awful it is to have to wear a suit, tie, and men's-style dress shoes.

I do remember an episode of Ally McBeal way back when wherein miss Single Female Lawyer ran afoul of this judge who upbraided her for wearing too short a skirt in court. And, well, she got all huffy at how totally sexist that was because, obviously, the judge wouldn't have had a problem if a man had worn a short skirt, right? So she went to court the next day wearing the shortest damn skirt possible and, naturally, there was this brouhaha where Ally's lawyer friends pointed their fingers at the sexist old pig "Are you saying a sexy woman can't be a professional!? Huh?! Huh?!"

Yeah, that sexist old fool with his stuffy old ideas of decorum-- which he is perfectly allowed to set whether you like it or not. He probably doesn't want women to vote either.

John Ritter played her client in that episode and was oddly okay with these shenanigans. I'm sorry, but any rational client would've fired her ass for knowingly trying to piss-off the judge. She just showed a capricious kind of indifference to his case that reeked of unprofessionalism. It was like she didn't care.

But it wouldn't have been much of a comedy if she actually faced any consequences for playing cutsie-pooh little sexual games. So, yes, a woman in a miniskirt can be a professional. And if she has to act completely unprofessional in order to make the point, I guess that doesn't detract anything. I stopped watching the show shortly thereafter because it just wasn't my bag.

It was a typical 90s grrrrrl power show. The audience for it was likely 90+% female. I saw an episode, and both the titular character and her even more obnoxious roommate made sure that I'd never watch it again.

The women should show up in burkas to protest this.

Dress Code:

Men: Only allowed to wear full length dress pants. Shorts of any length are forbidden. If it doesn't cover your entire leg, it's too short.

Women: Shorts and skirts are allowed, providing that they are not allowed miniskirts.

Mast sought to have males wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks and suit and their hair neatly styled. Females could wear business attire with a “dressy” top. Mini-skirt and tight pants – along with revealing necklines – were prohibited.

Typically the dress code for men is more restrictive than the dress code for women.
