There's two issues I can see.

Dealing with your emotions.
Appropriate legal response

It seems to me that you are a bit shaken up, and contacting the police is more about feeling better than anything else. If you felt better about the situation would you still want to go to the police? Is there something else you can do to process you emotions (maybe smack the heavy bag at the gym, or go to the park and watch time go by) ?

I was reading the other comments & generally agreeing with them. And then I felt a little sick to my stomach because if a guy slapped me or any of my female friends on the arm with intent it would be considered assault. So by saying not to waste your time making a report is basically saying that it's OK for a woman to hit a man with intent. I don't agree with that.

So I think you should report her. At the very least there will be an official report on the matter.

I know it may not seem that way, but in general this isn't something that police would not advise prosecution over. It is a nasty thing to go through, don't get me wrong, but it's basically a scuffle. If this were same gender violence they would probably say that.

Now, if she did something like follow you home screaming at you, or then proceed to try and properly kick you or punch you or grab a weapon, then that would be prosecutable. What I will say though is, regardless of whether she's a man or a woman you have the right to defend yourself, but as we all know in this situation if it's a girl you're defending yourself against, you have to be very careful.

So I would say no, it's not worth prosecuting her over, scuffles like that can happen all the time, fucking unpleasant to be sure, but next time grab her arm to stop her or something if that happens. The only time it would be a good idea to prosecute her would be if she generally got hostile and decided to make a big deal out of it and get other people to attack you and so on.

That being said, what I've talked about just applies to general self-defence advice, not Australian law specifically, always check with a lawyer first, but if she just lost her temper and acted like a bitch I wouldn't worry about it so much. It's not just women, it happens to everybody at some point in their lives especially if you're somebody who's outspoken and not afraid of voicing an opinion.

Edit: Oh and by the way, if you do grab her arm next time, be prepared for at least one guy or more to inevitably try to rush in and defend her without thinking.

I would say that its no big deal and people need to get over it, but then again women can ruin a mans life in the short term at least if the role were reversed.

Nothing will probably come from it because you're a male. It depends how ideological you are. If you want police reports of males being hit by females to proliferate so there are records of women being as or more violent than men, I suppose you could.

The question is, how does everyone else around you feel? Do they feel it is an overreaction? You could simply hurt your own reputation by "crying" or "whining" about being hit in the arm by a girl.

personally a slap is a non event in my eyes, if she punched you it would be different, you are obviously within your rights to prosecute, but it seems bloody petty to me.

a slap to the arm is weak as fuck. i would have thrown my drink in her face or something as a response if i was angry at what she did, then when she goes in to strike me, take her down.

"No public interest" is a test the NZ police can and do use, its has opperational guidelines and as such was embedded in the repeal of the child smaking defence. If I imagine this situation correctly a simple slap leaving no injury will fail this test.

If you have witnesses to demonstrable harm then yes they will accept the complaint, but realise that it may not go very far, even common street thugs they will attempt to get a community sentance, depending a lot more on the outcome than the intention. The severe sentances need weapons, women, children or hospitalisation.

As for your mental health, if this is "just a slap" and there is no damage or other context you have left out, I suggest you try for some perspective, we intentionally get a lot worse on the rugby feild for instance, and while unwelcome things happen its often best to assess the risk of it hapening again (or not) and move on. The legal/complaints process will often do more harm to the complainant than the incident (by reliving and making a mountian out of a molehill).

Also be aware that as with many human rights movements, Mens rights focuses almost exclusivly on what is going wrong with the world, and does not seek to change what is going right. If you are absorbing these messages and begin to feel the world is a shit place or is out to get you its a signal that you may like to take a holiday from political type blogs for a couple of weeks, just to get some perspective back.

Do not hire a Lawyer, they start at $400 or so. If you do think I've misread this and you want legal advice, each of the university cities offer a free legal advice service from a senior student. Citizens Advice will know how to access this as will your MPs office.

My advice.... and considering this is the men's right's forum, please don't take this the wrong way..... but she just slapped you on the arm for a remark you made about her friend.... grow some balls and get over it. You want to sue a 21 year old girl for slapping your arm?

Giving her a good telling off sure, but involving the police is too much. Unless she did a super hurricane wind up slap, it doesn't sound like something the police will be happy to deal with.

You might want to look at your attitude in calling the woman/girl a slut for slutting around. That makes it sound like it is a bad thing and it isn't in my eyes. its a pretty acceptable path that most people explore if they can at some time in their lives.

As for her hitting you, yeah she shouldn't have done that either. Looks to me like neither of you were particularly gracious that evening. She probably knew you were accurate in your description but still cared about her friend and acted out.
