No, but there is a shortage of men stupid enough to get married, given the current regulatory climate.

It also re enforces that women marry up, never down.

Women will never marry a man they consider "beneath" their social scale. So as things have vastly improved for women, and degraded for men in terms of economics, the pool of men women deem "Marriageable" has shrunk drastically.

[–]bikemaul 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Wouldn't the current regulatory climate incentivise women to be less picky in who they marry?

[–]Claude_Reborn 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No because women respond to emotional incentives more than they do logical ones.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Legal marriage is entirely financial, not emotional.

[–]Claude_Reborn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not to women.

It's their meal ticket and princess day.

[–]xNOM 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They would not do it, if it wasn't a legal contract. "Princess" is a legal position.

[–]blueoak9 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That hardly explains why we have such a bloated wedding industry.

[–]xNOM 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I imagine it's the same reason we have such a bloated cosmetics and female apparel industry. Men for the most part can't tell the difference between a $50 handbag and a $500 handbag.

[–]xNOM 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

For the 80% of women who aren't serious about their careers, modern marriage is purely a legal tool to lead a low stress life. This does not work if your husband earns less than you. For these women, marrying down would be like throwing away money.

"There are shortages of men for college-educated white women…"

Well, isn't that just too bad.... the most voracious consumers on the planet will not be breeding more voracious consumers. However will we cope?

I love stuff like this, im a college educated man with a great job and impressive work history and even been told a few years ago when i was in my late twenties I was good looking enough that I should be a model, also I genuinely would never cheat on a partner (never have and never would), and never even shouted or raised my voice at a partner.

do i want to get married? do i fuck! I have absolutely zero interest and it actually strikes me as a really really shitty deal.

I only hear about peoples divorces or people complaining about their wives/husbands.

additionally nothing turns me off more than materialistic people, Even if I was a billionaire, and could literally afford anything i wanted as much as i wanted, i would not want a wife or friends who thought "exclusivity" or "social status" was important.

I understand that obviously good things cost money and of course you cant buy a cut price lamborghini etc but people who pay big money for items purely for the "exclusivity" really piss me off.

in particular its jewellery, it seems socially acceptable for women to pine and lust after expensive jewellery, yet men who do the same are rightly seen as tacky crass and classless.

I don't think i have ever seen someone show a new piece of jewellery without quoting How much it cost.

Men are rightly scorned for being materialistic and we openly chastise and criticise friends and collegues who try and be all "showy" and are concerned with their status etc by buying exclusive brands/items.

but women genuinely seem to think it makes them unique or special or interesting, i have met so many women who genuinely seem to think their taste for expensive things is something to be proud of.

The so called "i have always had champagne taste, but a lemonade budget".

if you hitch your wagon (life) to that you will always be miserable.

Give me a happy funny sweet woman with a kind heart and sense of what really matters in life and all will be well, the problem is those people dont exists any more in our rampant consumer "Me first" culture.

I always think these kind of articles are just desperate attempts to try and shame young men like us into doing the 'responsible' thing and marrying a western girl that only wants to be with us for babies or as an ATM.

No thanks, never getting married, if however women want a loving and caring long term relationship ( yes with kids involved too ) then feel free, but I'm never getting married when you sign over yourself to a woman you give them too much political and legal ammunition even when they're the ones in the wrong.

It's great though, it means that both the feminist and social conservative cultures are going badly wrong and they don't know what to do about it so they're resorting to this sort of petty propaganda.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I didn't really see any propaganda in this article. I thought it broke down things pretty accurately. I found the numbers interesting.

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

While it certainly broke things down properly it came to some rather idiotic conclusions.

"Independent women, not unmarriageable men"

Was kind of a giveaway though it could be I'm still pissed off about all the other articles that were a lot less subtle about passing the blame onto men for all the marriage problems in society.

[–]xNOM 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think the article is actually showing that men aren't to blame as much as previously claimed by other researchers. She also breaks down female numbers by childless, which is an important marriageability metric preferred by men.

Weakening earnings among less-educated men have played at most a modest role in the decline of marriage. Shifts in male behavior, and the increased economic independence of women, appear to be more significant factors.

As a side note, overall lifetime marriage likelihood is actually not going down much in the US. First marriages are just occurring later and later.

I haven't read the full paper yet.

[–]Lethn 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I guess, still not hugely convinced that this idiot isn't going to make an article in the next few weeks though talking about how strong independent women can't get men because men are all pussies but I'm definitely biased in this area because those articles specifically point at my demographic lol.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh no. She totally will :-). She refers to children as "she" in the paper, lol.

[–]Lethn 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pfeh -_- :P

Having children also signs over a boatload of power to the woman. I'm not sure if marriage or having children has a bigger impact in this regard, but if the transfer of power by getting married is enough to put you off, then I'd at least think twice about having kids.

The way I see it is a educated man is more willing to marry an uneducated women. Women are less willing to marry a man who is less educated and earn less. So they call independent but it is more class oriented. Which is funny because when men say they won't marry someone who makes less than them they often get shit for it.

[–]xNOM 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think the male behavior is the lower male/female college ratio and increased incarceration rates.

Now imagine the same article with the genders reversed and the obesity as the criteria for marrigability.

Or are men supposed to feel good about being judged solely by their earnings potential.
