I never pay women compliments in the workplace.

I'm strictly all-business with them, like Joe Friday on Dragnet. Maybe I come-off as a cold SOB, but that's a small price to pay for self-preservation. So far, it's worked pretty well.

In fact, maybe this will get me branded as a nutter, but I have a policy of never riding in an elevator with a female co-worker. If I'm on an elevator by myself and the car stops and a female co-worker gets on, I will get-off and take the stairs instead.

That reminds me of my buddys policy when he teaches dance to kids. There's always at least two adults in the room.

I think those are both very wise precautions. The elevator one may be a bit extreme (there are 28 floors in my building - I'd be there all day) but the principle is sound.

One way to over-ride the question of giving a woman compliments is - if you feel the need to offer a compliment, and sometimes you have to, if she turns up in a radically different haircut for instance it'd look odd not to mention it - is too de-personalise it.

For example this chap got into trouble because he said "how stunning YOU look," if instead he'd said "that's a stunning haircut" - then he'd probably have been alright. Don't say "wow, you look stunning in that dress, really hot," say "that's a stunning dress, is it new?"

Sometimes, you have to remark on appearance, you'll simply look odd if you don't.

if you feel the need to offer a compliment, and sometimes you have to,

Seriously, no you don't. Let go of it, breathe freely, you can just let that other person be who they are, however they want to be, without comment. It doesn't matter whether they were wanting you to say anything or not, you truly don't have to. And if they ask, then it's easy to be noncommittally polite. I for instance, can run a hand across my bald pate, and in response to the question, "Do you like it?" reply, "Looks fine to me, but then I don't claim to be an expert."

Would saying "What does that have to do with work?" be wrong, or would they get offended by that?

[–]aesopstortoise 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That would probably qualify as 'creating a hostile environment', so it's an official warning and a gag for you.

Ordering me around? Gags?

Not my thing - and isn't that a bit too kinky for work?

You're a nutter and part of the problem. Fuck auto-throwing petals in the way of half the population to appease the lunacy of the few that might accuse you of something.

her advice at the end wasn't really horrible but:

But from someone who has always treated you as an intellectual equal, isn’t visibly panting or staring down your cleavage and generally isn’t a jerk? I reckon we can all live with that.

Isn't that entirely in the mind of the person receiving the compliment? Essentially, she is saying "compliments are ok if the person finds you acceptable". Which is unknowable for many cases.

Safer to keep your mouth shut than buy into the modern equation: (1) man says something, (2) woman decides whether he is an offensive scumbag that all society should shun, (3) anyone who questions her conclusion is automatically also deemed a scumbag.

It amazes me how women act like receiving frequent admiration is ENTIRELY a bad thing. Oh, I get it that could be oppressive and frustrating when your attractiveness gets noticed in contexts you would prefer it weren't, but I wish women understood what it feels like to be deprived of such validation, the way men are.
