A charity set up in her name, the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, now campaigns for women's safety.

"We don't think the answer to this problem is creating women-only carriages," says Kristiana Wrixon from the trust.

"Action should focus on tackling perpetrators' behaviour and demonstrating a zero tolerance approach to sexual, physical and verbal abuse on public transport."

The face of modern feminism, folks. "We can't take this discriminatory action against men. Not because discrimination is wrong, but because the only solution is to turn all men into radical feminists, so we can live in a Utopian society where everything we don't like is unthinkable."

Doesn't that actually seem like a quite reasonable position? What you quote doesn't imply that men would have to be radical feminists. To me it implies that all incidents of abuse on public transportation should be vigorously reported and punished. She even says that the solution isn't segregation, and she's right. The solution is dealing with reality. It will happen sometimes and when it does it should be dealt with.

Maybe. Googling the trust, they seem to come up with some pretty reasonable advice.

The next bit (from a different group) seems a bit less pragmatic:

"Our fear would be that something like this could be used to say to women, 'Don't put yourself in a position where you could be raped.'

"Victims could potentially be blamed if they got in a mixed carriage. We must never blame the women."

Ha. Well yes, that reads like satire. Yeesh. Which group is that? Sometimes its so hard to imagine how a group could advocate something like segregated carriages, but there you go.

A letter in today's times reads: Sir, Jeremy Corbyn became my hero on Wednesday for recommending women-only carriages (report Aug 27). I could have done with such discrimination last February when I was "imprisoned" for an hour on a late-night train from Milton Keyens by a dozen female revellers enjoying a hen party trip. I had balloons explding in my face, streamers raining down on me from all directions, the most appalling fox-like vocals ringing in my ears and glasses of bubbly splashing on my best blue velvet suit. When I tried to make a strategic withdrawal to the toilet I found the door jammed. It really was hell on earth, though one lady carrying a cardboard cutout of a Chippendale described it as "hen heaven".

I do hope Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister and legislateds at the earliest opportunity.
