When a prison looks far better than the housing of the common people the government should really reconsider how they spend their tax money. During my time as a student I was living in a 3×4 box forced to eat only noodles every other day while also working a side job to make ends meet. All while racking up a fat debt. If I didn't choose to study I would consider myself living in a prison cell. To think there are murderers and rapists living in luxury resorts without having to pay a dime disgusts me.

Now we only need to start sentencing women to actual prison sentences.

Women - get lower prison or no prison sentences, and even if they do go to prison get much better prisons. Or maybe rather than designing more comfortable prisons for women like in this article we move to the proposed British model - phase out prison sentences for women.

I'll hold out for a third option.

While true this is discrimination: fuck this regardless of gender. People just love undermining our justice system these days!

Prison itself is the problem.

Incarceration simply isn't as effective as corporal punishment. Burn the prisons and lash everyone who doesn't merit a noose.

I'll bite.

Maybe this is built and it catches on and some men's jails are built on this model as well in time.

[–]RedditorJemi[S] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No. Read the article. This is already built. And it's only for women. Men's prisons are a goddamned hell hole, and they've built an experimental luxury prison for women.

[–]Leinadro 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I did read it.

In that case then the next move is to push for mens prisons to be built the same way.

I don't think that's going to happen. They'll keep this one luxury prison available for females, but if it means improving prison conditions for men, they're not going to expand the program. Besides, I am not particularly interested in prisons being designed, at great expense, to coddle prisoners.

I want safe prisons for men, where men don't get raped, and where there is not a criminality society that works directly against reform.

How exactly do you test the efficacy of a prison like the one in the article? Dollars to donuts they're only putting women in this prison who are already very well behaved. It doesn't look like a testbed for new ideas, but just a very expensive place to place the least problematic of female prisoners. This is clearly not designed to be expanded. This looks like a direct response to feminist pushes like these:

Feminists are not going to bring reform for men's prisons in our lifetimes. If we want that, we'll have to do it ourselves.

Seriously to hell with feminists. I like option 2, doing it ourselves.

[–]mochacola 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, like MRA has political and financial muscle. Please. Get Ryan Gosling up in front of UN talking about men's rights. If you can do that, then, we talk luxury demands.

Heck, Father's for Justice are labeled as terrorists. Dads are being held in prison for payment issues. Try remove those first.

I'm not saying I'm going to rely on feminist movement to do anything. But it would be very nice if they can stfu with their lies.

[–]RedditorJemi[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. However, if we can't actually tackle prison reform right now, there are still things we can do regarding the criminal justice system, such as promoting the living fuck out of The Innocence Project for example.

People think that the concerns of prisoners are not relevant to them - until they get sent to prison, and then everything changes. To date, the Innocence Project has processed around 14,000 requests from inmates each year, but has thus far only acquitted around 300 of them. This is a really sad number. even 300 in 14,000 would itself be a ridiculously low estimate for the percentage of wrongly imprisoned people in this country.

300 in 140,000 is just pathetic, and represents both a lack of funding for the Innocence Project and the fact that they have to get permission from a prosecutor to review the DNA evidence in each case. Needless to say, prosecutors don't like to do this. If more awareness could be built for the Innocence Project, then prosecutors would have to allow them to do their work. If more people are proven demonstrably to be innocent, then people will be more concerned about conditions inside prison. People only hear about real criminals in prison. They don't often think about the fact that there are innocent men in prison, or about the fact that even real criminals have rights that need to be respected, including the eighth amendment right against cruel and unusual punishment - and prison rape is most definitely cruel and unusual punishment.
