Anyone else completely surprised by how much height matters in male attractiveness?

If we want men as a gender to question the beauty standard, shouldn't we be willing to do the same?

But I've noticed that the subject of male height has the capacity to turn even the most open-minded and feminist of my friends into straight-up bitches. The general consensus around the table that night was no short guy is ever gonna get it, no way, no how, ugh, never never never never, with the kind of vehemence that would make me feel sick to my stomach if directed at a woman's size or shape by a group of men. Even for the short women of the group, it wasn't enough that a guy be taller than them -- he had to be objectively TALL, even if that meant towering over them.

This is actually incredibly common in my experience. I've encountered many women who were a certain "type" of person in all areas of their personality except for dating preferences. When it came to dating, they were someone else. They could be the most radically feminist, intellectually sound person, but when it came to choosing a mate they turned into a neanderthal. They needed their man to be tall, broad-shouldered, confident and assertive. I think a lot of it has to do with modern women wanting their cake and eating it too - they want the benefits of a traditional society where men are expected to cater to women for their approval and women are generally not held responsible for any wrongdoing; at the same time they want the benefits of being in a progressive society where women have all of the same opportunities and freedom as men.

... A similar trend is career driven women who don't need to be the breadwinner, but still won't date a guy not in the same career station and tax bracket as them. This works in their 20s, but the ground quickly shrinks underneath their feet as they reach their 30s, leading to more "where have all the good men gone?" articles.

After what I consider to be a very successful first date after a few months of flirting on Lavalife, I get told to my face that I'm too short to date, despite being 2" or so above her height. I literally walk out and stiff her with the bill.
The topic of male height comes up at work and one girl who is around 5' says that she prefers taller men because she feels "safer", at which point I note that even having one other person, even a little kid, improves your chances of avoiding an encounter, so size matters vastly less than numbers. I tell her later that I had a bit of a crush on her, that I was thinking of asking her out, but now that I know that my height was going to be an issue, I'm outta there.
I'm now in a long term relationship with a woman significantly taller than I am (5'9" vs. 5'6") and I love it, she loves it, and she says she's always been into smaller guys. So, there's a positive end to the story.

TL;DR: North American women's height preferences suck ass.

I dated two women who were taller than me. Both cheated with taller guys.
