In a future remake of "ALIEN" Ripley should be played by a Transsexual Kangaroo-kin.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Funnily enough, Ripley was originally a man, but i doubt feminists would be happy to see a man play Ripley. Go figure.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The original draft had no genders.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Kinda, but not quite...

"He and Shusett had therefore written all of the roles as generic male ones with a note in the script explicitly stating "The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women..."

Section 5. Casting of article Alien %28film%29:

Casting calls and auditions for Alien were held in both New York and London. With only seven human characters in the story, Scott sought to hire strong actors so he could focus most of his energy on the film's visual style. He employed casting director Mary Selway, who had worked with him on The Duellists, to head the casting in the United Kingdom, while Mary Goldberg handled casting in the United States. In developing the story O'Bannon had focused on writing the Alien first, putting off developing the characters for a later draft. He and Shusett had therefore written all of the roles as generic male ones with a note in the script explicitly stating "The crew is unisex and all parts are interchangeable for men or women." This left Scott, Selway, and Goldberg free to interpret the characters as they liked and to cast accordingly. They wanted the Nostromo‍ 's crew to resemble working astronauts in a realistic environment, a concept summed up as "truckers in space". According to Scott, this concept was inspired partly by Star Wars, which deviated from the pristine future often depicted in science fiction films of the time.

Top kek

[–]Kingpink2 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How does that make sense? The character James Bond IS a heterosexual white man.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She states in the article that heterosexual white men have done a great job, but she does not care because she wants to take down the "white patriarchy". Obviously she does not care what the character actually is

[–]Trunk-Monkey 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She should pitch her idea for a Jane Bond movie to the studios and see how far she gets...

[–]InWadeTooDeep -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If it was a quality film I would watch it, especially if it took female limitations and capabilities into effect, that would make for a good spy movie.

[–]Wargame4life 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

then she and everyone who agrees with her should pool their money and buy the rights and make the film.

I think we all know how that will do at the box office.

what a surprise feminists expect they should dictate what projects and risks other people should take with their money simply to appease their idiotic agenda.

there is a reason feminists try and demand businesses do X rather than go into business themselves and do X, because feminists are fucking deluded morons, who couldnt even make a basic product.

seriously give me one product that was made by a feminist for a feminist cause which has competed on merit and been critically acclaimed or a business success. (Selling activism doesnt count).

e.g a feminist film or game or firm etc.

good luck with that, feminist make nothing but shit

[–]wazzup987 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

If we take James Bond as code name then sure. But instead colonizing James Bond why not make a female counter part in the bond universe. Or how about watching the fucking movies and seeing all the femfatales?

[–]Maschalismos 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because feminists cannot, do not create. They can only co-opt.

[–]Jaykaykaykay 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Its kind of funny, before i wouldnt really care if Bond was black, but now i hate the idea. Pretty ironic.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I have no problem with Bond being black.

[–]Wargame4life 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I would, as Bond is supposed to be a 1950's aristocracy wank fodder pin up. hence his tastes and lifestyle is centred around "ye english gentleman" style events.

bond being black or being gay just doesnt fit what bond was supposed to be or is, if you want to make a film about a gay bond or a black bond thats absolutely fine, but dont do it as part of the bond franchise, as its like introducing a time machine into the bond films, it completely goes against what, the bond films are and the character/world/story.

else why not make him a robot or make it a rom com or perhaps a film about fatherhood etc, all these films exist and can exist and be good films they just dont fit into the "Bond" character and storyline/dynamic.

its a bit like remaking "blackadder" and making the cast all 20 year old hair gel models, it fundamentally sits against the dynamic of the show/premise.

bond is coldwar english gentlemanly oxbridge fantasy 1950's schoolboy fantasy tales, it has very specific criteria.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I can see your point. But you're also implying "In your case why not make Bond anything?". I believe Bond shouldn't be female but I have no problem with Bond being black. I mean we can rewrite story arcs but also sticking to original lore. I think instead of rebooting Bond we can continue on with a black lead and act like nothing changed.

Regarding Bond lore, an lgbt or female Bond would be absurd. But a change of skin colour wouldn't deviate that much.

[–]Wargame4life 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you believe if there was a hollywood film of "king arthur and merlin" made in 2015 and king arthur was black but it was in no way a story issue or point of relevance. (i,e it was merely a superficial specific) that the film would have the same "feel" or success?

no it wouldn't because the historical reference point and social context of the time has clear cliche stereotypes.

forwhatever reason bonds creation and historical links are not black, hence a black bond severs those links and makes him less bond.

a black bond would be a huge difference, you are probably not English and dont understand the 1950s old boys network upper class oxbridge society that bond was a product of and boyhood dream.

dont confuse bond with die hard. they have different requirements

[–]Alzael 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean we can rewrite story arcs but also sticking to original lore.

No you can't.Because Bond being a white upper class english gentleman IS the lore. It's the backstory,it's the origins and core concept of the character.

If you make him black,it's not Bond. It's someone else that you're calling Bond as a token and racist gesture to appease the lowest elements of humanity.

But a change of skin colour wouldn't deviate that much.

Bond is a character,he has a character, part of which involves his race and class you can't just make random changes to it and keep the same dynamic. The same mannerisms would look out of place coming from a black man.Big black guys don't exactly scream "upper-crust, aristocratic, British gentleman" to most people.Unless you're doing a parody of Bond films it won't work.

If you want a black gentleman agent, make one in another franchise. But he is not Bond.

I really wish guilty white people would knock it off with all of this "let's make X black" crap.

Believe me,we will tell you when we start to care about whether or not Bond is black like us.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here is the question: why not just create a new character that is black and has his own story instead of taking someone else's character and changing him to fit what you want....well the reason is because it takes work to create these things and creativity; etc...and you just can't be bothered to do that when it's just so much easier to demand someone else who worked hard to do something for you for free...

[–]Allevil669 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't have an issue with a black man as Bond either. As long as he's unapologetically British to the core.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreed, he's just a white character. You wouldn't make Scooby Doo a Marmot just because dogs are used often for movies.

[–]iainmf 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's like trying to tell a broken-hearted love-sick teenager that there will be others, and they insist it has to be James Bond, it can't be Evelyn Salt, or Robert Clayton Dean, or Anton Jackson.

[–]SporkTornado 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Samuel Jackson would make a good James Bond.

[–]wazzup987 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seconded

i have no problem with bond being a black guy, or a woman if i really think about it.

but surely you could do far better by creating an original IP, something which you could create the lore and back story to suit.

that said i would like to see colin salmon as bond, that dude is suave as fuck.

[–]ThePigmanAgain -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't mind Elba as Bond. He couldn't be any worse than the ugly blond guy they have now, unless the franchise corrupts him and he starts popping up in ads wearing drag. Better yet would be a totally different series starring a Bond-like character played by Elba. As for Damian Lewis, he's just too weird looking for the role.
