Clever cartoon on what can happen when a man DOES talk about his feelings.

Man is found NOT guilty of rape, but the cops keep telling his prospective employers that he "might" have done it anyway. Another reason why false allegations are so evil.

Meh, most of us don't know how to find those links. Also, a few readers from this sub will make no bloody difference to a big site like The Guardian. Small sites looking to get established by grabbing whatever traffic they can, that's what archives are good for.

[–]baserace 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There are 112,000 subscribers to the sub (which doesn't include casual drop-ins), and people do share links and open links multiple times.

Meh, don't let the number or subscribers fool you -- right now there are 380 people reading the sub.

[–]baserace 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And a different set of 380 now, and another different set soon, and then another different set, and....

There are 2830 in AdviceAnimals right now despite having over 4.25 million subs.

Also, you don't have to be in the sub to click links from subscribed subs that appear on your front pages.

[–]ThePigmanAgain[S] -3 points-2 points-1 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps. It would be interesting to see some stats as to how many different IPs visit this sub every day, that would give us a far better idea of how many people are actually visiting.

LOL.

If you view this movie solely though a gender politics lens, then (a) you're going to miss a great film with spectacular cinematography, especially when you learn it's an up-converted 3D film, and (b) you're going to be pissed off.

Somehow Jessica has missed the fact that the entire film is one giant example of the damsel-in-distress "trope" (not to mention women-as-background-decoration). Every woman in it had to be saved by a man, or they'd be dead, or still imprisoned. Every. One.

Jessica has also missed the fact that we've already dismantled the patriarchies that matter. Religion is on the way out, except in the world's backwaters, and those places are set on self-destruct anyway. Let them.

Also, since this film is (needlessly) part of the Mad Max franchise, it's tied in with Thunderdome and Aunty Entity, who doesn't mind having a few people bumped off, including a developmentally disabled man, if it serves her interests. Men and women both can be pretty bad in MadMax-land. And in 2015, what you can show on film is quite different from 1985... imagine what Aunty Entity would be up to today...

And, even worse than Aunty Entity, Jessica sees only what happens to the female characters, ignoring the brutal slave conditions of the war pups and war boys, and the lies they are told, to get them to give up their lives. And she's entirely blind to the lives of the rabble down below them. "We are not things" is not a feminist statement; it's a human one.

Who here is thinking about what to do "when" civilization collapses? Jessica is. But I think we're trying not to get to that point. We've invested too much to lose it now. Imagine -- no internet?!

Lastly, somehow Jessica seems to have forgotten Aliens and T2, from decades ago which were only the beginning of films about strong female action characters. Men have been handling this for a long time. We can handle, and love, Fury Road.

Or they take issue with using that portrayal of society as something characteristic or representative of patriarchies.

Valenti's M.O. has always been creating scathing indictments of arguments no one is making.

How is the idea of this movie new? At all?

The "EVIL Dictator what has women as his sex slaves" is a trope so old it's wearing adult diapers.

Seriously, the concept of saving precious women from the clutches of some terrible sex crazed man is just an example of how men have been looked at as sex fiends by lots of women throughout history.

And lots of men just buy into it and enjoy the Good Man, who they see as themselves, defeating the Bad Man caricature those women see #YesAllMen as.

It's no wonder feminists love a movie that brings back that old wheeze again.

By these standards, there's another feminist movie for you. A blast from the past showing how men are as always oppressing women whenever they get the chance.

I have to say that the more i read about this thing, the more feminist it seems, but as i haven't seen it i can't really pass judgement. As for Mad Jessie, that shit-stain on the Guardian's frilly underpants, she does the usual thing -- implies that ROK is an MRA hangout and cites Manboobz as if he is worth citing. And as for the guy from ROK, he looks less like an idiot every day. In fact, we should probably congratulate him for being able to figure out from the trailers what the rest of the world only figured out once they saw the whole movie!

From what I've heard about the matriarchal/amazonian group in the movie it feels like they're trying to give feminists the dream but it also seems like criticism of their kill all men crap, since they'll kill any man that shows up and their society is pretty much collapsed because of it.

Ahahahahahahahah.

Thanks Jessica, keep em coming. Brilliant anti-feminism ammo.

The good old "this group/person doesn't actually represent the MRM, but we're going to act like they do" argument. It worked for Elliot Rodger, why not try it again?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I actually wrote a complaint to the guardian about her yesterday pointing out her misinformation in that story. I doubt I will hear back from them but I'm hoping that as it's the guardian and they seem to care about being factually correct, maybe just maybe they will notice her bending the truth to fit her narrative and pull her in a bit. But I doubt it. Maybe if more people took the time to do the same they may make her change her ways.

I really wouldn't hold your breath, The Guardian like most MSM cares mostly about it's narrative. Sometimes that means hard facts, other times it means propaganda.
