I do accept the military can be a good experience for a young person, I wouldn't be opposed to an optional military service for say a year for a young person (<30) that is open to both men and women

Mandatory is crossing the line

Isn't that just called signing up?

[–]UsernameIWontRegret 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No signing up pretty much means you give your life away for ever to the cause. Here in the U.S. a minimum 4 years and you'll be in reserve afterwards. I think he's talking about like a one or two year deal that has no binding power so young people can experience it without dedicating their lives to it. I actually like that. I think it'd be beneficial to both sides.

There has to be some sort of return of investment though, if people are only in for a year, then how much time is left after they've done their training? Army training in the UK is 14 weeks I believe, so thats more than 1/4 of the time.

For young people there is already the cadets.

What do you want a military for?

If you want to aggressively use it, conscription for a year or two is a bad idea. Good examples would be Soviet Union in Afghanistan and the US in Vietnam.

If you want to have a large reserve to defend your country against or deter foreign aggression by a more powerful opponent it's a much better option. Cases in point: Finland, Estonia and in the last year or so Lithuania and Ukraine.

transform the lives of young men and women

I think you mean end the lives of young men and women.

Harry chose to enter the military and even went on combat duty in Afghanistan. Good on him. That doesn't make it OK to force other people to put their lives on the line. Sure OK if the country is being invaded, but otherwise no.

At least he'd be forcing both men AND women to go. That way everyone's lives are all equally as worthless!

If I served under the same circumstances as Prince Harry, I'd do it in a snap.

I'm liking this guy more and more

Despite being perhaps the world’s most eligible bachelor, he said that he was quite unlike the perennial singleton Bridget Jones – to whom he had been compared – and was ‘very happy not having a girlfriend’. He said: ‘Bridget Jones? Where’s that come from. Because I write my own diary or because I don’t have a girlfriend? Bridget Jones? That’s sad. No, for me, it’s good… I’m not, sort of, looking. It’s cool.’

Are they planning war or military police state, or both.

[–]tothecatmobile 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Yes of course, Prince Harry, the true mastermind behind the UK government.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

He is one of the ruling class there, if he is making such a public statement in the media - its likely for a reason. The only obvious reason is that its getting the people ready for it actually happening.

That doesn't mean he is the single "mastermind".

[–]tothecatmobile 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The rulling class? I think you need to update your knowledge of the British political system.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Im not talking about politicians, they are public servants. I'm talking about those above that system.

You are naive if you think its most likely that Harry made this as an off the cuff remark in the media.

[–]tothecatmobile 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

they're all Lizard people too right? ;)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So when he gets photographed playing naked pool in vegas or dressing as a Nazi for a party, that's all part of the "plan"? No. The guys a fucking idiot.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, thats not part of the plan, they were leaked photos.

Making statements in the media about serious policy changes ... thats not an accident.

[–]Insula92 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good idea.

[–]Stephen_Morgan 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

More accurate headline: Idiot wants to bring back slavery.

[–]stemgang 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Conscription is just forcible theft of labor.

If it is so wonderful, why won't people sign up for the program voluntarily?

[–]imbecile 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd say all government positions, not just military, should be filled by a draft. Reduces cost, people get an education and job experience, people are more involved in government, less entrenchment and opportunities for corruption ...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Shut up, Harry. Sure, you did it, good for you, but I've no particular interest in risking my life for a pittance. While your posh pals Tarquin and Hugo would go straight to Sandhurst, Johnny Council Estate will be used as cannon fodder. I guess death or dismemberment could be considered "life-transforming", so in that regard, at least, you're right.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He can talk, it probably was a great experience for him, getting his arse kissed what with being a member of the ruling family.

[–]Sasha_ 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely. Giving guns and training to young people in Northern Ireland, and young Muslims from across the UK? Can't see that going wrong at all. We should definitely try that. Definitely.

Of course, I'll be moving with the kids to Australia.

[–]ukreview[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This will be very bad news for those campaigning across the world to end conscription. The fact that Harry doesn't mind if women are forced to risk killing themselves too is no sweetener for me in a suggestion that I think will send out a really bad message to those countries which currently jail men who try to dodge the draft. Frankly, I can see the Tories making this law but they are very unlikely to force women to join. The left-wing Tory Heseltine has already spoken out against it, which says to me that the right of the party would quite like the idea.

Good thing the royal family don't rule us anymore and we have this wonderful thing called democracy. Eat a bag of dicks you ginger wheezy voiced faggot.
