He should have gotten the parents to sign a waiver. I get that the kids were never in danger and the marks weren't permanent but I can imagine my mother's reaction if I had come home with a burn mark.

It's an awesome lesson plan and if he had waivers, he would have been golden.

When I came home from school with minor scrapes and burns from science or wood/metalworking classes in high school, my (single) father would assume I must have been having fun in class.

As long as the school treated it properly with antiseptic or whatever was necessary, he saw it as just something that happened sometimes when learning about that stuff and his usual response was "Well, you know not to do that again!"

My favourite science teacher was the one that let us take (minor) risks and try things for ourselves under close supervision. I've still got scars from magnesium burns on my hands and have nothing but fond memories of that class. Much more effective learning for me than the dry textbooks and "group activities" of later school years.

If I had gotten burns from a Tesla coil, I'd have showing them off to anybody who would listen.
