To me this is the equivalent of putting a black man in front of the camera and being in awe over how articulate and educated and well spoken he sounds.

I just got banned from r/feminism for asking a question. I tried again in r/askfeminists, a place I'd never posted before, and found out they had banned me before I got the chance to post it there.

It is simply wonderful that the world posesses such loving fathers like Emio. Share this beautiful video of a father that doesn't just play with his son, but actually cleans up afterwards.

These idiots think this this guy is some kind of rare exception.

Unbelievable.

Unbelievable.

It's not a bit unbelievable. It feeds a dearly cherished narrative. That dearly cherished narrative privileges mothers over fathers at every turn. This kind of thing is very much to be expected.

"Fathers don't get respect. We need to show that fathers can be loving, too!"

"This father is getting recognition and showing that fathers can be moving, too! This is discrimination, just like drawing attention to black men being articulate, well spoken and educated."

Ah huh. Maybe a little less righteous indignation and a little more happiness that things are moving in the right direction?

I think you've completely missed the point of what OP is trying to say, /u/sillymod. It's the fact that a good father is shown to be playing against type, or some sort of exception to the rule. A good father supposedly is a deviation from the norm. It's also important to note that men must prove they are, or can be, good fathers while women are considered good mothers just because they gave birth. But I guess that goes back to the women as "human beings" and me as "human doings" thing.

Thank you, I really didn't want to respond to that, and yours was the perfect response.

I don't really consider it the right direction when people think that it's the exception instead of the norm that a dad is a good parent, to the point that a time-lapse video of dad taking care of the baby goes viral. I know a LOT of dads, and the ones who DON'T act like this with their children are very few and far between.

If they had made a time-lapse video of a mom taking care of her child and then acted like it's SO out of the norm to see, moms would be offended.

Edit: Even worse, the idea that men don't take care of the baby is a 1960's-1980's holdover. Much like the 'idea' that women don't work. Imagine if we time lapsed a video of a woman working all day, then made a huge deal out of it and act like it's SUCH a rarity to see... Women would definitely be offended. I am not sitting here CHOOSING to be offended, I just get really tired of the insinuation that dad taking care of his child is anything BUT the norm.

Fine. But let's celebrate that the video is helping break that stereotype. Get mad at the people who make the stereotype, not those who are fighting against it.

[–]SuperDadMan[S] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I get that. The video isn't really the problem, it's more the attitude of the text surrounding it that is the issue.

[–]blueoak9 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

things are moving in the right direction?

I know whoever posted this thought it was cute, but that's the problem. This is as cute as the mom bringing home the paycheck, but no one is posting a video of how out-of-the-box that is. (It isn't).

Right direction? Some tiny progress, insulting as it is; some tiny happiness.

Do you think she liked what she saw?????
