We hear about the absence of black men from families, but what happens when they disappear from an entire community?

The book "Freakonomics" talks about this. If i remember correctly, once you get to something like 1 in 6 men, from a particular community, in jail then the crime rate for that community begins to go up.

It is simply the law of diminishing returns with respect to law enforcement.

Actually, if you want to destroy a people:

Destroy women. No, I'm being serious. Kill the majority of men in a village and they get a few more mates as a male. Kill the majority of women and you have a big problem. No/few women equals no/few babies and no/few babies means that your village's growth is stunted for a while. A long while. That's why us men get sent into wars, conscripted, stuff like that. Because women are too 'special'.

Its not that the number of jobs went down, its that the number of people applying for them went up. This is a critical part of what happened that keeps getting lost.
