I see this phrase used endlessly here on r/mr as a euphemism for that money a divorced man pays to his ex if he has kids and it's time it stopped. These are not payments that you pay as part of your support for your child, they are payments that support your ex (may be an ex-husband, but most likely an ex-wife; pronouns gendered accordingly).

The payments go to her household, and they supplement her income. She can spend this money however she wishes. She may spend this money on the kids or she may not. If she does, does she also then spend an equivalent amount of her own money on the children as well (superficially stipulated by most child support legislation)? Maybe she does and maybe she doesn't. In any case it doesn't matter because there's nothing you can do about it unless you've got a ton of spare money to hire a lawyer. Good luck with that if you're making CS payments. Family courts are notoriously lax when it comes to women, and notoriously strict when it comes to men. (The state is strongly motivated to collect payments, because the feds pay the states to do so, if you're wondering why this is such a big deal to the government.)

Let's also keep in mind that if you have any visitation you are already supporting your child. You have a household to support just like she does, and you don't get a break on your bills just because you only see your kids every other weekend. Does the CS order require you to pay for health insurance in its entirety? That's you already supporting your kids, too. It goes without saying that any other payments you're required to make on her behalf fall into this same category.

So let's stop referring to government sponsored extortion payments as "supporting your child". It is onerous bullshit and a giant lie. The last thing we need on this forum is a layer of verbal sugarcoating on the CS dogturd.
