To anyone who would use the old line about how lucky the kid was to sleep with an attractive teacher: his life has been horribly affected. Cases like this shouldn't be influenced by how "awesome" the victim thought it was, but how terribly he was affected (which probably factors in at times, sadly). Kids don't have the ability to make the kinds of judgements involved here. That's why what this teacher did is illegal, and why the teacher's penalty should have been much, much stiffer. Poor kid. I hope he gets some good counseling.

It also bothers me how quick people are to say something like "it's not the same", when their entire reasoning for why it "isn't the same" essentially boils down to "women are beautiful and innocent and need to be protected from evil/gross predators" and "men are gross/evil pigs, and are just being blessed by a beautiful and innocent teachers".

No, fuck that. A woman who is having sex with her male student is taking as much advantage of her position than a male teacher would with a female student. A female student who chooses to have sex with her male teacher wanted it just as much as a male student wanted it with a female teacher. A young woman getting a dick inside her is just much affected by it as a young man getting his dick inside a woman. It doesn't matter that men have an external member and women have an internal one, the effect is still the exact same. That's not different.

And, if the only difference is that girls are socialized and conditioned to have a very hostile, negative and fearful view of male sexuality, or that boys are socialized and conditioned to have a very glorified, positive and sacred view of female sexuality, well that's wrong too. If what differentiates women as victims and boys as perpetrators, is the fact that we live in a society where all boys are assumed to be perpetrators and all girls are assumed to be victims, then that is a fucked up self-fulfilling prophecy too.

Mhm. Right.

Except the guy was SEVENTEEN. "Kids don't have the ability to make the kinds of judgements" my ass. Old enough to drive, old enough to work, but not old enough to refuse sex? But old enough to brag about it in class and show photos and videos around? In which world?

Now, don't get me wrong - it's still an improper thing to do for the teacher - simply because of the possibility of indirect coercion due to her position of authority. And yes, were the genders reversed, we all know what would likely have happened. But double standards doesn't always mean the harsher standard should be applied to everyone. A 17-year-old is almost an adult, no matter if male or female, and certainly can be trusted to know whom he or she wants to bang.

Countering the infantilization of women with the infantilization of men aint the way to go, IMO.

I think I would have agreed with you at one point, but then reading how this young man's life was affected (toward the end of the article) made me think a bit more. I don't know that I'd have been ready to engaged in a sexual relationship with someone that much older than me at that age. I probably would have (at the time) thought it was a huge win, but the later effects might not have been so great.

[–]Sanguifer 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Might. That's the thing. Corelation =/= causation, at least not necessarily.

It's not unusual for people that age to suddenly get worse grades. And, frankly, this MIGHT have something to do with the fact that he just went through a court ordeal - one he didn't necessarily want to go through in the first place. And the person he was sexually and possibly romantically involved with was jailed and had to register as a sex offender. And their relationship probably broke down, seeing how it went public and the teacher in question apparently was married...

Remember, those are people, not pieces on an agenda chessboard. Their relationships and choices may be far from perfect, but they made them. When it all comes crashing down, worse grades and self-isolation is the least I'd expect!

I repeat, I don't know what's actually the case. I haven't talked to the guy. I haven't read any of his statements. I only read something the district attorney attested. My point is just this: If this guy had a girlfriend, and she dumped him, and following that he got a bit depressed and failed his grades, that would be just life. But if that 'girlfriend' is significantly older, and a teacher, and gets arrested for statuory rape - apparently without his knowledge or approval - then suddenly it's somehow sinister and rapey and exploitation.

Well, I am not saying it wasn't. I am saying that it might not have been.

Edit: And before anyone tries that shit on me - yes, I'd be saying the same thing if the genders were reversed.

Okay, what?

First of all, quote me where I say "not damaged". I don't know if he's been "damaged" or not, and neither do You. From that article, it wasn't even him who was pressing charges. I quote:

Erica Ann Ginnetti, 35, was arrested in January in Lower Moreland after police were tipped off when the victim showed photos and videos of the woman to his classmates.

For all You or anyone else knows, all this started without his knowledge and against his wishes. I don't know either, but that's exactly my point. I don't presume to know what's best for a 17-years-old whom I don't know.

How is this guy ever going to be able to respect a female authority figure again? I dunno, maybe by not being an idiot who projects one experience onto everyone? One experience we still don't know was actually negative for him.

"He's an adult" give me a break, most people don't reach emotional and logical maturity until their thirties.

Oh, okay. I guess the feminists are right, then, and all sexual intercourse IS rape after all. At least until we reach our thirties. Massive, massive facepalm, mate.

In thirty-forty years, because of this woman, there is now a much higher probability that this guy will turn abusive as well, cause all women just want the D, amirite? Thanks, double standards!

Citation needed. But sure, go assert some more things with zero evidence because it just feels right. That's the way to go!

I was 18-19 as a freshman in college, and had a relationship with 28yr old in who was formally my TA. I have a pretty solid grasp on respecting women, and female authority at 25. Who knows though, maybe a psychologist could uncover some of my deep seeded trauma.

It's still inappropriate for a teacher to do that, and she should get more punishment vs pity, but I seriously doubt this kid is broken or scarred in any way. You're way too emotionally charged, come back to the real world bro. Yes I was an immature idiot at 17, but I was mature enough to understand a few things...the post above you isn't saying we reach our maturity pinnacle at 17, just that one is more mature than you give credit for at 17. Saying we are not fully mature til our 30's is useless here.

If we don't become mature til our thirties, I guess I have a lot of growing up to do dealing with all the emotional trauma I receive day to day as a refistered nurse and paramedic In my 20's. Not to mention from my girlfriend who is older than me.

If it was a husband with 3 children and a partner would the judge have been so lenient if the victim was a girl, or the relationship was homosexual? Or would the Huffington post title instead read "pedophile rapist gets 30 days"?

“What young man would not jump on that candy?” Page [the judge] said.

Ones that don't want to be statutorily raped.

Have some compassion for this woman's victims.
