My Ex-wife and I and are on some what mutual terms and agreed to $500 a month on child support for 2 kids. Is that fair?

well, the contract will be void in the court because you have no legal standings against what is best for the children. all monies will be considered gifts. and if and when the guy she is with decides to move on she will most likely get state assistance. this means that the state will tell you to give all your financial info and she will be awarded half of your income. she will always know she has you under her thumb "because you are being civil" and when it is no longer beneficial for her to be civil she will hit the courts and say you have paid her nothing. and they will believe her since it was not a contract through the court and you have no proper standing. again all monies will be gifts. 13.05 is still just above poverty even with cost of living increases. i am assuming you are not legally divorced. so again the contract will be void the moment you are divorced.

Get everything in writing, Make sure you pay in a form that can be proved later on, and have a lawyer review any piece of document that you intend to sign. As for the amount it depends. What is the cost of living where the children live? how much time will those kids spend with you? Are there any other expenses you will be responsible for? What is the value of the stuff that you paid for that she's keeping?

All of these need to be answered to make sure whether the amount is appropriate. You need to also check local laws to determine the legality and consequences of out of court agreements

It's a good thing that you are trying to work things out with your ex without lawyers, but get a lawyer to review the final agreement. They will check the calculated amount for your income.

Edit: Other things, like custody, visitation, holidays, division of assets, etc. Talk to a lawyer.

Here's the rules:

a) Don't listen to people on the internet who are likely not from your legal jurisdiction because child support is done on a state by state or province by province basis in most nations. There might be federal guidelines (Canada, some European countries), but by and large it's the province or state that will determine the amounts. Just do some digging on what's normal for your specific state and ignore the pundits.

b) $500 a month for someone earning $13.05 an hour would be high in my jurisdiction. The federal guidelines up here in Canada would peg support for 25447 in annual income and two kids at $389.12CAD a month. See the lookup here. Seeing as that's in CAD, you'd think a US rate would be lower, but again, that depends on the rules in your state. This calculator assumes there's at least a 60-40 split of care, so the 40 or lower pays the 60 or higher. If there's a more even split, there's no child support via this calculator at all.

c) Paying informally is a recipe for overpaying. Everyone I know who did that at the outset of their divorce found out later that their actual amount required was WAY below what they negotiated, and once they set the standard, it was difficult to get their ex to accept less money, even if that was the legally required amount.

Also, it could really, really behoove you to push for equal time with your children right now. Equal time with the kids will equal less child support, and it will help to ensure that you get the 50/50 custody that you and your kids deserve.
