Considering that around 70% of divorces are instigated by the wife, one has to wonder exactly where the personal responsibility lies. Is there some expectation that, child care aside, a woman can sever the marriage at will and be carried by her ex-husband's income?

Dual income families are not only possible, they're nearly the majority. And what about single mothers? Are they doing the impossible by raising children effectively while working?

In a perfect world - split the property, split the debts, go your separate ways. Maybe even mutually pay into an account controlled and audited by the courts for child-care expenses if there are kids from the marriage.

Spousal support, in this day and age, just no longer makes sense.

Yes.

She had a job which should be valued, normally that value is paid through being supported but if circumstances mandate a divorce then she needs to be paid somehow.

That said our current system is absolute shit.
