Was cooler when I was younger and could ride bulls. Now I'm slow to get off the horse. I coach better than I do.

Not to mention if I want to go to a store that isn't walmart, tractor supply, or dollar general I have to drive over an hour.

I've got a kid that will be leaving for a pretty big state school on an athletic scholarship in 2026. It took a lot of effort to put enough culture in him him where he can fit in the places you just naturally fit in.

Hell it's like an hour and a half drive if he wants to shop at Hollister or similar. Yeah I got one of those

We don't have Uber, public transportation, just the amount of people when you're in a walkable city honestly. Nothing will make a Chad turn into a cast member from Beverly hillbillies quicker than showing incompetence or unculturedness.

I mean he's got a leg up in some areas. Chick's love hiking and white water rafting and shit but navigating clubs and just the culture of walking around a city is silent something that makes you stand out if you can't

There are 2 high schools in my entire county. 1 in the next. Your talking maybe 400 people in his grade that he can potentially run into. Even that number is high because my farm is 8 miles from town.

1 movie theater with two screens. 1 walmart. 2 parks and like 5 restaurants or fast food places and some of these kids have to drive over an hour just I get there. 1/3 go to the actual city because it's closer to them.

I had to culture him if I want a daughter in law one day that I haven't known since she was a baby. It also highly increases his chances of her making a lot of money if he meets her at college.

Our job market is pretty good here all things consider though. For whatever reason when the built our closest cities they put all the factories in the rural areas. People will drive from the city to here for the white collar jobs that run them.

I do want that little shit to come back after college though. Somebody has to run this farm and Mines a side hustle in size. Like I work an average of 48 hours a week at my real job and still have time to run it solo.

It's going to be difficult to work so much and farm in 20 years though. Guess he'll either take it over or I'll retire when it comes time.

We farm walnuts and cattle. The carbon offsets expire right around the time I assumed I'd be too old to run it by myself and the timber value is in the high 1 million to possibly mid 2 million depending on the market at the time.

It's not a lot to maintain really but you have to be close. About a week every year to deal with the walnuts. 4 days 2-3 times a year to cut hay for the cows and horses. Then a few hours a week to put out hay every few days in the winter, maintain equipment and such.

Not going to guilt the little guy into living my life though. I can see where it wouldn't appeal to everyone. His family has farmed his land since before the Civil War but things change.

Like the walnuts. That was his great grandad idea. Price of walnut timber was worthless then. Who would have guessed he'd have planted that gold mine.

We have 1 gig internet because my government was competent and all farm kids are super gamers because what else is there. Not sure how a city girl he meets at college will fair here though.

My wife will spend a summer/ fall canning stuff from our garden while I'm working on a tractor or on a horse checking fences. Honestly she likes to go on rides checking fences or the walnuts to with me though.

It's a simpler life that I'm not sure someone that's used to calling door dash and having clubs and theaters and v stuff can ever get used to.

Then again when she's in my kitchen canning spaghetti sauce she spent all day making she's not "having a girls night getting hit on at the bar." Girls nights in our town. I'm not really sure what they do. Last one was at my house because we have a sublimation printer and the girls were making shirts. she made me a good one Another girl hosted a painting party. One had a pottery studio he r husband built in an old barn. They help eachother with canning and stuff. It keeps them busy.

My guys nights. I live close to n town so gym or I'll ride out to the horse club for monthly meetings and fall rodeos. We help each other on our farms. Sometimes we'll just sit and have a few beers at the barn while our wives gossip.

Wife and I watch a lot of Netflix. You kind of have to be self motivated or you'll die of boredom.
