I second the not buying the house. Absolutely do not go into a joint investments of you are getting a divorce. Lots of online guides about how to go about it. Make a list of everything. Consider what is going to who? Make another list of things you can't part with, And another with things you can. Then make a third list of things that she will want. Include things that are on your want list. Put some serious thought into where you are willing to sacrifice in order to keep other things. I've read too many articles of people being in court for years. Because they wouldn't budge over something of sentimental value. Which is ridiculous in my own opinion. You love fluffy the dog. That's fine and all. But you can get another dog. Consult a lawyer. Make an exit strategy. My parents wasted 5 years of their life fighting over their assets. And over 50k. Each. Golden rule. Lawyers are not your friends. They are there to make money. The longer you are in a divorce battle. The longer they get paid. That's all they really care about. Just like most people. Include the things that you want. Your goal should be a smooth. Quick. Divorce. I know that you are probably both very unhappy/ angry/ resentful of each other. But don't let that cloud your judgment. At least do your best not to. Let's face it. This is an emotional ordeal. But that's what's going to screw you over. If there is anything of emotional value that you Absolutely cannot part with. Like your mother's wedding rings. Make them dissappear. If they stay in your wife's possession. You will probably never be able to get them back.
