You need to talk to a lawyer and file. You need to drive a stake in the ground for residency. I am not familiar with California laws. If you establish residency, she likely can’t just move the kids 8 hrs away.

California here. My date of separation was the day I moved into the spare bedroom. When I filed that is the date I used. I was kicked out of the house a month later but the lawyer told me to use bedroom switch day. The marriage was over eventhough I was still in the house.

Hire a good local divorce attorney and file for divorce usually in the county of your marital residence.

I'm in the UK so don't have advice for your exact situation, but I wanted you to know you're not alone in this.

Personally I would get a lawyer close to home. I'm guessing the papers were filed in the state you reside?

Maybe ask friends/Co Workers etc for recommendations on Lawyers.

If you have joint bank accounts, you need to set one up for your pay to go into - nothing stopping you from transferring money for the upkeep of your daughter.
