A little background. I have two kids 13yr old son and 4yr old daughter. Over the last year, through the separation with their mom, sale of the family home and moving into separate residences, the kids were with me every weekend. I’m very close with both kids. For the last two months we have been splitting time with the kids 50/50. This has created some issues due to limited time with them, having to get my STBX on the phone to FaceTime with my daughter. I’m working through that by visiting her at her pre-k for lunch once a week when possible. Its summer camp there right now, so there have been a few events with parents invited so that has made it easier to see her. My son has a phone and I have maintained a very close contact schedule with him. I’ve asked him to check-in with me once a week, or as often as he wants. However, he forgets, or basically ignores the request. When he stays with me, he is very respectful and generally a great kid. We just had a father-son fishing trip weekend to the coast on 4th of July and other than some normal 13 yr old attitude problems, he has been very steady through this whole process when he’s with me. He’s had some behavior problems while staying with his mom. My question is: Should I be “requiring” a check-in? Should there be consequences if he disregards the check-in? I’ve asked repeatedly, and it seems like disrespect from my angle, but I also understand he’s 13 and going through a lot with the divorce, summertime, etc. Normally I would revert to discipline - mainly push-ups, chores or loss of privileges, but I’m unsure now if my request for the weekly check-in is unreasonable. Looking for advice and how others are handling similar circumstances. Thanks!
