Dads got visitation only. Moms got the house and the kids and alimony and loads of CS$'s.

Moms would get remarried, and dads would lose all custody of their kids, "in order to support the new dynamic of the stepdad."

Moms would then change the last names of the kids to her new last name.

The scene that really hit me (upon re-watching after a divorce) was when the ex-wife came to the dad's cheap, new apartment to pick up the kids. She was early, without apology, which cut into dad's time. But she was also obnoxiously judgemental about the living environment and the food, hinting it was unsuitable for kids.

When I wanted my kid to come visit me at a new place, my ex and her lawyer wanted photos of the place. That was never in the divorce decree, but it's a subtle way of saying I'm too stupid to know what a suitable living environment looks like. And it gives her another way to veto the visit.

Also, another message from the movie: Single moms end up with Pierce Brosnan! Husband #2 is always wealthy, handsome and a perfect father.

EDIT: When Robin Williams killed himself, the press was quick to highlight some mysterious disease and its unpredictable side effects. No one wanted to talk about how he owed MILLIONS in alimony every year, and had been financially wiped-out by two divorces. Williams once said the word 'Alimony' was Latin for 'having your wallet ripped out of your asshole.'
