Hey everyone. I’m posting because I’m at the point where I feel like I’m living in a loop and I need some outside perspective from guys who’ve actually done this.
I share custody with my ex. High conflict/victim narrative for over 10 years. Disappeared from the child’s life for 6 months last year doing huge damage. We have a court order that’s supposed to be 50/50, but in practice it’s been messy for a long time because our child has had significant mental health issues (abuse both physical and emotional).
Over the last year they’ve spent long stretches in higher levels of care, and since coming home it’s been a constant balancing act between structure, stability, school, therapy, medication, and just getting through each week without another crisis. I’m not trying to bash my ex. I’m trying to explain the dynamic as clearly as I can. Over the past year that has resulted in a huge gap between reality and 50/50 where we I have my child way more. That has led me to seek a child support modification. Money is at the core of the conflict and I believe the child is being manipulated.
The biggest issue right now is that my ex and I cannot communicate in good faith. At this point I believe it to be impossible. The litigation has created terrible animosity. When things are calm, it’s “we’re coparenting” and “we agree stability matters.” When tension hits, it becomes stonewalling, vague reassurances, unilateral decisions, and then my child suddenly comes back with a rehearsed set of grievances that mirror my ex’s talking points. This is inclusive of exact recitation of parent conversations over email or text. It’s like she gets recruited as an ally, and then she comes to my house in attack mode.
I’m the more “rules, supervision, boundaries, schedule” home. I’m not perfect, but I’m consistent. My child will arrive and immediately launch into an hour-long grievance dump, swearing, accusing me of things that aren’t true, insisting she isn’t safe, demanding to leave and go back to my ex’s, and sometimes following me room to room trying to force me into a fight. If I don’t engage, she escalates. If I engage, it turns into an endless loop where I’m defending reality and she’s arguing a story. Eventually, burns out and later sometimes apologizes, but in the moment it’s brutal. It feels like psychological warfare by proxy.
I’m also dealing with repeated attempts to change schedules and care arrangements unilaterally. Sometimes it’s framed as “the therapist supports it” but then there’s no documentation and the therapist later confirms they made no recommendation about timesharing. Sometimes it’s framed as “I’m not refusing exchange, I’m just not facilitating” which, to me, is still refusing to follow the order. And there’s an ongoing pattern where my ex will avoid giving specifics about plans and then accuse me of being controlling for asking for clarity.
What I’m afraid of is the long-term effect on my kid. They are smart and emotionally intense, and they are vulnerable to being pulled into adult conflict. I’m also afraid that the constant instability and “two different realities” will keep them stuck. I’m trying to be the safe parent without turning into a doormat, and without letting my kid learn that explosive behavior is the way to control adults.
I’m already doing the basics people recommend. I’m staying calm, not matching their escalation, setting boundaries, keeping receipts, documenting, using email, trying to keep the focus on Their care, and pushing to stay consistent with the schedule. But I feel like I’m getting hit from both sides: a high-needs child who is dysregulated and easily influenced, and a coparent who won’t collaborate & is more than willing to recruit the child to their “side” and seems to benefit from chaos.
The goal behind this is clearly to make life here so hostile that my child spends the majority of time at the other home and creates a new status quo that then is used to justify maintaining or increasing child support. My ex is more than willing to destroy the child’s relationship with the other parent without any hesitation.
If you’ve been through something like this, what actually helped? How do you handle a child who is clearly triangulated and comes into your home as a “messenger” or an “advocate” for the other parent’s agenda? How do you respond to the “I don’t feel safe here” statements when you know they’re being used as leverage but you still have to take safety seriously? Did anyone find a way to protect the child from being used in the middle without escalating court conflict 24/7?
I’m not looking for revenge. I’m looking for strategies that protect my kid and keep me steady. I feel like I’m carrying the weight of building stability while someone else keeps knocking it over, and it’s exhausting.
Thanks for reading. Any perspective from people who’ve lived this would help.
