I have been divorced from my first wife for 15 years. Our only child is a senior in high school and will be attending college in Fall 2020.

Per our divorce agreement, each of us is obligated to pay 50% of our son's college expenses. According to our disclosures in applying for Federal Student Aid, it is apparent that while I have saved enough through a 529 account to satisfy my 50% obligation, it is apparent that my ex has saved...well...nothing.

She rents the home that she and my son reside at. So the only way to borrow would be though a personal loan at a bank or credit union. But she has terrible credit and has filed for bankruptcy protection in the past.

I certainly can't afford to pay the whole bill without additional financing, nor do I think that would be fair. But I'm at a loss as to what my other options are. I can file contempt against her, but it won't make money materialize out of thin air, obviously.

So if I want to do the right thing and get my kid through college, I have no choice to make it happen on my own? Has anyone, here, had a similar predicament? I would very much like to hear about your experience(s).

Thanks.
